3.0 out of 5 stars Be Careful Who You Trust! August 28, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An interesting and highly original take on paranormal abilities and how they affect the lives of two ordinary people and their friends. These folks take a scientific approach to understanding their new abilities and continue to view themselves as human.

The matter of fact approach almost makes this fictional account seem to be non-fiction. There is no magic, no Fae, and no other otherworldly peoples. I rather missed the magic. There is an intriguing plot line suggesting paranormal abilities are latent in everyone and it just takes something strong, externally or internally, to trigger their emergence.

It turns into a literal battle, billed as a military exercise, through the disturbed thinking and undercover actions of one of the friends who turns against the others. The violence that occurs is minimally graphic and there is no gratuitous sex. The ending is bittersweet for while much is gained, much is also lost. Be careful who you trust!

4.0 out of 5 stars Very surprised July 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
When I first started reading this, I thought, "Man, this is so campy" but I'm totally glad I stuck with it. It was fun when it needed to be fun, but when... well, no spoilers, but the action was great and I enjoyed it all. I even got incredibly furious when... well, when that person did that thing. I just wanted to rip his guts out, but it was a fun-fueled hate that I enjoyed. It was a great read overall.

Really good story! Constantly wondering what will happen next. Can't wait to read the next book! I enjoyed the way it was written, being able to see through each ones eyes. On to the book 2. Thanks Dave for the great adventure!

This is a good story that holds your interest and works the idea of psionics well with the storyline. I felt very connected to the people and to the story.

3.0 out of 5 stars Distracting Format February 7, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I liked the plot of this book and the subject matter was unique and something you don't see every day. However, each chapter being written from the point of view of a different character was very distracting to me. I was constantly flipping back to the chapter beginning to see who was talking. And often the chapter was a total repeat of the preceding chapter, just from another character's point of view. Too repetitive for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Insubstantial, but that's typical of a thriller. February 24, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Basic concept: An explained storm leaves a pair of adults with psionic capabilities, who call in their friends to help them figure out what to do next.

Things I liked about this book:

- Multiple viewpoint characters. I like this as a general feature, though I'm not a fan of the way this particular novel did this: changing narrators, but having each chapter be a first person narration. Still, it is nice to be able to view things from more than one lens.

Things I did not like about this book:

- Too many abilities, too fast. In a matter of days, characters progress through telekinesis, precognition, telepathy, empathy, and astral projection. This struck me as absurd.

- Unrealistic character portrayals. The two main characters are fairly believable in their motivations. Several other characters are not. Without getting into specifics due to the risk of spoilers, I found the actions of the married couple invited in to share the secret insane and unbelievable.

- Lack of explanation. How did these powers come about? Why this particular couple? Do they have any limits at all? None of this is explored. I'm betting the intent is to make me read the rest of the series, but I'm not actually motivated enough to learn more about these people for it to feel worth the time investment involved in reading more of these books.

- Uncritical "research". When discovering powers, I can buy that the characters would go online to look up information. I have a much harder time accepting that all these characters would simply accept all claims they found about psionic abilities online as being true, and therefore assuming they could do all of them. Especially considering one of the characters is a scientist.

Loved the characters in this book. They interact with humorous banter. It was fast paced and had some surprises. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

More About the Author

You'd never guess that Dave was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, eh. He's traveled a fair bit, but then a North Carolina gal caught his eye. Really he just wanted to get away from snow, but then a rescue Plott Hound wound him around her paw and that was it.

He gardens, is handy around the house and yard, and cooks better than he cleans. An avid reader his whole life, he thought someday he'd try it himself. After his wife told him to stop talking about it and do it, he finally gave it a go. We hope you enjoy his efforts!
