5.0 out of 5 stars Its good but..., February 2, 2004

3DS MAX has a massive learning curve and is a 3D animation program that you can almost do anything with, however there are some points I would like to note here.

If you use 3DS MAX then be prepared to spend at least few YEARS at it to be able to reach those extremely realistic CGI effects that you see in the movies. If you are looking to actually do that sort of thing for a living then you are better off learning the pro packages like SOFTIMAGE or MAYA, so you might be wasting your time with 3DS MAX if that is your goal, but then again everyone to their own tool to do the job.

3DS MAX is more suitable for those looking to do animations on a somewhat controllable level with lots of options for things like video effects, the web, CDs or even computer games. It makes the best 3D Package for that lower end of the scale but if you are looking to do stuff for 35mm motion picture film then I suggest heading in the direction of SOFTIMAGE or MAYA which has that market cornered.

3DS MAX is extremely popular and you will enjoy working with it, but be prepared to spend time on it like nothing you have ever tried before. I have seen people using things like AUTOCAD sitting in front of this thing for months like they have never used a computer before. It is the one of the steepest learning curves out there, hands down and if you are prepared to really go all the way then go for something completely pro instead like SOFTIMAGE.

However when all is said and done this is great package with lots of things going for it. The tutorials are certainly a hell of lot easier than they used to be with version 1.0 or 2.5 and Thank God for that!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing but....., April 18, 2004
This review is from: 3ds max 5 (CD-ROM)
This piece of software is astounding, the possibilites are endless, with a bit of imagination and know how. My only worry is the the extradonary amount of time it takes to even begin to understand how it works, its a long process but the rewards are limitless. But to aid you in your quest of knowledge is a extensive manual and tutorials to set you on your way that are all fairly straight forward and easy to use. Very classy and worth while tool for any budding designer of 3d graphics.

I have had problems in buying this product on-line in the past.
There are two versions of theis product, The student and the comercial Licence. Be sure to buy the version you need.
Talk to the dealer before making an offer or you could get stuck with something you don't want.
