5.0 out of 5 stars can't wait for the entree
I thought that all 3 songs were awesome. The whole CD had a real refined flavor. 'Discretion Grove' had a definite Pavement smell (to me, anyways), which is to say that it's pretty good. 'Sin Taxi' is also a good time. I think any hardcore Pavement or Malkmus fans will really appreciate this CD. I for one can't wait for the...

2.0 out of 5 stars c'mon, steve, give us a break...
Nothing very, very good lasts very, very long - at least that's what I've been told. And so it went with Pavement, may it (they) rest in peace. My sadness was tempered, though - I was excited to hear what SM had up his sleeve. Unfortunately, not too much. I hope his forthcoming LP is more substantial than "Discretion Grove". This 3-song cd single is as...

One side note: did anybody notice that there was/is a 'live' version of Sin Taxi floating around Napster? Over the summer, I picked up a poorly recorded bootleg of this song that included Malkmus giving a whole introduction. I had forgotten all about it, but I recognized that beat within the first 15 seconds... What a great surprise!

4.0 out of 5 stars Must Have Malkmus, August 24, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Discretion Grove (Audio CD)
Will Malkmus continue in the tradition of Pavement and release excellent singles and EPs? It's too soon to tell, but this is a great indication of things to come. While Discretion Grove may have made for a mediocre single (it's still a great song), these two B-sides are top notch. "Leisurely Poison" is a short little bit of well structured indie-electronica; obviously an experimental track but one that succeeds, while "Sin Taxi" is a standard Malkmus solo track, but one that is relatively long and it is certainly good enough to have been on the album. That there are only two new tracks on this single is a bit disappointing, but at least they're stellar.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2 great b sides, April 8, 2002
This review is from: Discretion Grove (Audio CD)
The best 2 b sides to come from the Malkmus singles.
leisurely poison always reminds me of a Beck b-side, and I'm not quite sure why? Neither of the songs are throw aways, certainly worth picking up for any big Malkmus of Pavement fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Warning: Good, intelligent music within, February 25, 2001
This review is from: Discretion Grove (Audio CD)
I recommend this to anyone who enjoyed Terror Twilight and/or its predecessor Brighten the Corners. The album itself is more like BTC, and this single bears more than passing resemblance to the music on the Shady Lane EP(very relaxed, I guess I mean). 'Discretion Grows' is not spectacular, but it is a solid track, and more rocking than you might expect. 'Sin Taxi', as other reviewers have said, is the best track. It IS spectacular and clearly outshines the other two songs. The single is worth getting for this song alone. So buy it.

Oh, and I've been searching for the live version of 'Sin Taxi', not having much luck. If someone has it and ICQ, please contact me. ICQ # 28585182

5.0 out of 5 stars 100% worth getting, January 25, 2007

OK, I give this one five stars because if you're looking at this 3 song job it's probably because you already have malkmus' first full length and liked it.. if this is you, you might as well just get this. The b-sides are completely solid (which was not always the case with the mixed-bag pavement singles) and maybe even better than the album tracks. So if you liked the full length enough to search out the eps you will not be dissapointed with this one.

Admittedly, I agree that this isn't Malkmus' strongest solo stuff (I prefer pig lib), but c'mon, no person I know who is into pavement can agree on which songs are the best.. or even which albums (dare I say terror twilight is my favorite pavement lp??).

If for some reason you are looking at this item never having heard Malkmus or Pavement, quit being a cheapskate and just get a complete album already!

3 tracks, "Discretion Grove" plus 2 non-LP tracks. The extra tracks are worth the price alone (used for $2.59, well, that's what I paid). I wouldn't pay $40 for it unless your an uber-completeist, but if you can pick it up for a few bucks, do so.

While "Discretion Grove" is probably not the single I would've picked from Malkmus's first solo album, the two B-sides on this single are excellent. "Sin Taxi" is melodic and rockin' -- with a wee hint of trippy psychedelia in the middle. "Leisurely Poison" is short (just over a minute and a half) and has a bit more of a Pavement flair than the other two songs. Both b-sides are worth hearing!

My sadness was tempered, though - I was excited to hear what SM had up his sleeve. Unfortunately, not too much. I hope his forthcoming LP is more substantial than "Discretion Grove". This 3-song cd single is as lightweight as Fresca in a paper cup. It reminds me of how, once Big Star collapsed, Alex Chilton abdicated (to a substantial degree)his pop sensibilities. Malkmus has seemingly put little effort into this recording. I don't mean to come off as a "playa hata" because I'm a real fan of his. But this is weak, and anyone who says differently has a case of the indie emporer's new clothes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nothing special, February 16, 2001
By A Customer

Very straight forward song, nothing too exciting about this one. The song almost reminds me of Texas Never Whispers without the guts. There is a humorous part to this song at the end that sounds like the Georgia Satelites or something.

5.0 out of 5 stars Attention: All Frontmen to the Front!, January 17, 2001
By
This review is from: Discretion Grove (Audio CD)
Though I was initially dissapointed to find that Pavement's last album, Terror Twilight, lacked the songwriting talents of Spiral Stairs---the resulting album was wonderful. The songs from that album serve as a precursor to his forthcoming solo album. This release and the album to come are highlighted by a clean, produced sound----a sound that will at once ring familiar and new. Be not afraid---your fingers will turn up the volume, you lips will mouth the lyrics...

In classic Pavement style--the B-sides on SM's EP deserve the same attention as the album tracks. Sin Taxi, in particular, is beautiful.

Having heard the album itself---this is just an appetizer, the main course awaits. "Hear the sound of the crazy ship."
