NBC made a huge mistake, letting this show go. I look forward to this show having a long run like "Homicide: Life on the Street". When is King going to get her Emmy??

It typically takes me a while to get attached to any characters of a new show, however this one had me hooked on the 1st season. The depth of characters, the heart stopping action, excellent above the bar acting by all involved. This is right up there with Law & Order but it still has a sharp edge to that L&O lost a while ago. Enjoy!

My wife and sixteen year old son are always in a struggle to find shows the three of us can watch. We were with Caslte for awhile but then my son tired of it and we find Criminal Minds well at times a bit "mindless" and repetative and then we found quite by accident since no one seemed to be talking about it the show Southland. Well we are through the third and just started the fourth season and I have to say as someone who was an actor on Hill Street Blues and who thought NYPD Blue would never be topped here is a show that is only for me at least passed by The Shield.
The acting is as good as it gets and the scripts and the direction are on a par with the best of cable. One of the real brilliant touches, a trait it shares with the best of Law and Order, is that the backstories don't get in the way of the individual cases. The off the job love affairs and drug and parent problems are seamlessly integrated into each and every episode. I also think because it is created by a woman (sort of like what happens on Scott and Bailey) that the emotional subtexts and the female characters are stronger than on male "glance" driven action shows.
It is a show however that is a bit of an acquired taste which is probably why it didn't quite survive although 5 seasons would make it a hit on the BBC. It is gritty and violent and like The Shield shows a non tourist version of LA, my home for 24 years, but unlike The Shield you are not asked to "root" for a "hero" who is essentially immoral but rather you are motivated to admire and be thankful for the men and women who "Protect and Serve"
At least give this show a chance. I think if you love great TV you'll will love Southland.

The most realistic cop show ever. I wish it had gone on. There is no way they ran out of material, I spent 15 years in the business and no two days were ever the same. Cos are human.

Typical... my wife and I 'heard' this was a good series and with it being summer we decided to record it. Of course we recorded season 6 (which **might** be the end of the show... NO!) and were BLOWN away!

LOVING the 6th season we decided we needed to know how it all had lead up to the amazing conclusion (?) of the series and began at season 1 of this series and now are on season 3. Gripping, heart stopping, eye opening, and when just when you think it's about to take a lull... it hits you right square in the head as it did last night with us in the shocking ending of "4". Holy boogers!

Now you might think this is just a cop series and it's not. My wife LOVES this series as much as I do. As a matter of fact, she is the one who recommends we watch it when she's had enough of my other cop shows.

Just an amazing series. It gets better and better as each episode unfolds. The characters are ALL fully explained, and you are vested in each and every one of them.

If you feel there is nothing to watch this summer... you are SO mistaken. WATCH THIS SERIES from start to finish. You need to start at the beginning. Trust me on this. You will not regret it.

After my somewhat harsh review of seasons one and two, I have to say that season three is absolutely superb. The main characters have developed complex personalities (though definitely more jagged than well rounded) and the story lines have condensed into a more coherent narrative with a number of underlying back stories. There is thankfully none of the annoying & unexplained appearance and disappearance of characters or the diffuse dead-end plot lines that dogged the earlier seasons. The documentary style wobble-cam is still in evidence but it seems to work in this instance and the whole series has been tense and engaging.

It seems that the seemingly insurmountable task of creating an original, gritty and plausible cop show has been achieved - great stuff and we can't wait for season four. Thanks to Channel Four for broadcasting this season at silly-o'clock (and without adverts on C4HD); we're thoroughly hooked now and will be buying this season so that we can re-watch the whole show before they hopefully air season four.
