PROLOGUEI wrote this book as a means of sharing the insights I have been privileged to witness, experience and muse upon over the last 4 decades. The sum total of my life bears many scars and many joys. All of these groundings in social etiquette and human understanding were borne from ignorance, study and imitation.
The pains and insecurities I experienced by being discriminated upon, and the discriminating eye I have levied upon others have more often than not been the result of illusionary perceptions of what - should be without any regard for what might be.
It took me a while to understand that I am a piece of a grand masterpiece. I yearn for others to know me better, but I must first set the example of knowing myself better, and others. The old adage... no one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care... is so true.
People have beautiful gifts to offer. Being ridiculed, ostracized, discounted or just plain old ignored for whatever reason are painful human practices that breed loneliness, and contempt. Discrimination is pervasive in our society cleverly cloaked by private agendas, cliques, traditions and above all... the intangible thoughts hidden deep within our minds.
After many years, I fully understand the value, complexity, novelty and beauty that are so cleverly disguised within the term - Diversity. This book compiles so many facets of our human kind into one reference source. Because of the extensive science, facts and lore... one may get overwhelmed, although I encourage ALL to make the journey through all chapters as a picture will unfold highlighting your own personal beauty in ways you had not fully appreciated before. Simultaneously however, the reader will find revealing blemishes and hypocrisy that too many of us exude subliminally.
I would suggest that all readers begin by looking at the Table of Contents first... all topics, so you may understand the journey. For those who want to extract a quick injection of insight... please read the 1st chapter entitled
Introduction and read the last chapter entitled
Pulling It All Together which by most accounts violates the protocol on how any book should be read. I do give you permission though to see the beginning and the end first to understand the journey in between. The last chapter synthesizes all of the material within the book. Giving you this material upfront though... is meaningless without understanding the facts that support the conclusions. The first two sections
Discrimination and
Diversity are to be viewed as reference materials.
The last section is the most important. In the
Inclusion section you have a multitude of tools, tips and suggestions that will help you develop a magnetic personality that so many of us clamor to have, experience and see.
The Paying It Forward and the
Pulling It All Together are my favorite chapters. They encapsulate the need, and the potential, inherent in all of us!
I hope to meet you sometime, someplace. Enrique Ruiz (humandiversity.biz)
Early Praise For over 20 years I have navigated my career toward Diversity and Inclusion initiatives, while attempting to make the necessary linkages to productivity and performance of the individual and the organizations I support.
Enrique provides a fresh approach anchored by scientific and historical relevance.
He infuses more meaning into the phrase "From Whence We Came."
Discriminate or Diversify represents the culmination of facts, perspectives, and data supported by evidence with both past and present day significance.
It's a thought provoking wide angle view of Diversity and ultimately our attempt at Inclusion.
Sonya Bethea, HR Manager, Fortune 100 Company ... I found it very interesting, well documented and I learned a lot! Enrique describes very well the differences among human cultures, religions, beliefs and behaviors showing that there is no one "right" way, but many, according to the view point of each individual. Here in the UN we are constantly exposed to these differences of cultures and it is a real chance to open one's mind to consider them. I am also very sensitive to what he describes of his own life, his childhood and the feeling of "not belonging." It echoes in my own life. I was born in Algeria when it was a French territory and after the independence I came to live in France (I was 4) growing up in a place where people lived for generations and sometimes I had the same feelings as described in the book. I very much like the quotations, they were always pertinent. I will use them. Jean-Michel Durr, Chief - Demographic Statistics Section, United Nations For the past 23 years I have been a consultant on the issue that has confounded the United States - diversity and inclusion.
We say
"Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free...", yet we have historically behaved in ways diametrically opposed to that position. Enrique has combined history, psychology and personal experiences to not only explain what happened, but also why and how. His book, Discriminate or Diversify puts into one volume a resource that should be required reading for anyone who intends to lead or be a part of a diversity or inclusion effort. This is an extraordinarily well researched, well documented, and poignant treatise on the state of diversity and inclusion in America as seen through the eyes of a real American. Take the time to read this compendium; it will have a dramatic effect on your attitudes, beliefs, and most importantly your behaviors towards others. Vincent Ford, President, Vistar Corporation Reading
Discriminate or Diversify brought alive many similar thoughts and experiences that I have had in travels to other nations and interactions with other cultures. Enrique puts together diverse, yet a significant number of factors from various fields such as Psychology, History, Astrology and others that affect our everyday interactions and the attitudes we harbor towards people based on their origin or their choices.
This is an eye-opening and important book worth everyone's consideration in today's world where multi-cultural interactions are the norm.
Radhakrishna Garge, B.E (Electrical Eng.), MS Information Systems, Hindu, Hombre del Mundo Where was this book when I was in school??!!
Where was this book when I was growing up and forming opinions, friendships, ideas, knowledge??!!
I picked up Enrique's book,
Discriminate or Diversify, and I found myself learning something on each & every page!!
After I read a page, a section, a chapter, I couldn't wait to read the following one.
I have been a psychotherapist for sixteen years and am counseling people daily on these issues.
This book has given me a completely different light on discrimination and the issues behind it, involved with it and how to handle those issues in ways I have not thought of before.
This is one of the greatest books I have read to-date.
Beth Gilbert Katz, LCSW-C, Psychotherapist I had so many 'aha' moments as I read this book.
Often, I had to stop reading, put the book down and evaluate my thoughts and feelings about one diversity topic or another that were addressed.
Even though I consult on many of the areas covered here, it was still a learning experience that will help me further discover the talents, beauty and strengths within humankind.
It also reinforced my ongoing opportunity, obligation and desire to continue to learn and to share my knowledge, experiences and points of view with others.
Thank you for providing new perspectives in diversity.
Beverly J. Moss - HR and Diversity Consultant Discriminate or Diversify takes a fresh look at diversity-related dilemmas to examine how we perceive those who are different from ourselves. Enrique Ruiz challenges us to move from finger pointing to personal accountability.
Discriminate or Diversify is a must-have reference for anyone who wants to improve his or her personal and professional relationships.
Janet Crenshaw Smith - President, Ivy Planning Group I wish I had this book 20 years ago.
As a Human Resources (HR) manager and leader within a company that values diversity,
I've attended countless training sessions, first in the military and then in private sector, to learn how to relate to people and respect their differences; to appreciate and tap into the value those differences provide to both projects and organizations. Yet all of that training pales in comparison to the insights I gained from this book.
The presentation of facts, figures, and information across a broad spectrum of topics related to diversity allowed me to ingest the concepts and perform truly introspective examination on my perceptions of the world around me.
Anyone that is truly serious about understanding the world around them and learning to appreciate the unique values and experiences of others
would be best served by starting with this book.
Jim Stevens - Fortune 100 Company, Engineering and Operations Sr. Manager I am enjoying reading through all of the information. I am definitely learning new facts that I was not previously aware of. I get that you are showing the reader that there is no separation between people by showing examples of factual data with resources. If I were writing a research paper on diversity your book would be a great resource with all the tables and graphs and sited resources.
My thought process is that we all have our own answers when we look within and really listen to what we are telling ourselves. I have seen so clearly that we don't learn by others telling or being told what to do/think or how to do/think. We eventually all come to our own answers in our own time. But... we also learn from others experiences when presented as "this is what happened to me". I think
it causes us to think in a way that we try to relate other people's experiences to our own. We can then place ourselves in their feet. Of course our perspectives are all based on our own life experiences and beliefs.
