Book Description

April 11, 2006
First as a runaway bestselling novel and then as a blockbuster movie, The Da Vinci Code has fascinated millions. Its allegations against historic Christianity are colorfully portrayed---but are they true, or merely inaccurate accounts of centuries-old myths and heresies? * Has the true historical record been suppressed? * Were eighty different gospels contending for the New Testament? * Was Mary Magdalene really directed to lead the church? * Does a secret society keep Jesus' bloodline hidden? * Is the divinity of Jesus the fabrication of a third-century church council? * How accurate is the research behind these and other assertions in The Da Vinci Code? Enjoy riveting DVD interviews with noted experts---and prepare for some lively discussions as your group explores provocative issues raised by The Da Vinci Code. Four sessions address the following questions: 1. What Can History Really Tell Us? 2. Can We Trust the Four Gospels? 3. What's the Role of Women in Christianity? 4. Is Jesus Really the Son of God? This DVD-guided small group forum is designed for use with an accompanying participant's guide that includes discussion questions, sidebar information, background material, Bible verses, and relevant quotes. Each session includes interviews with experts and concludes with facilitator Lee Strobel's perspective. Also available: Discussing the Da Vinci Code Participant's Guide

Wretched mortals, open your eyes! Leonardo da Vinci Watch It! (DVD Clip #1, 1 minute) In this brief video segment, Lee Strobel introduces the discussion topic for this session. Use the following space to take a few notes. Discuss It! 1What was your overall reaction to The Da Vinci Code? What did you like most about the book? Least? Give reasons for your answers. 2What questions, issues, or concerns about historical Christianity does The Da Vinci Code raise in your mind? W h a t C a n H i s t o r y R e a l l y T e l l U s ? 17 3Can historical events be verified? Why or why not? What do you think determines whether or not an historical event actually occurred? Watch It! (DVD Clip #2, 7 minutes) Use the following space to take notes as Lee Strobel interviews historian Paul Maier about: history being written by 'winners,' the reliability of historical documents, and the Priory of Sion. Dr. Maier, a professor of ancient history at Western Michigan University, has written over 250 scholarly articles and reviews in professional journals. His books include In the Fullness of Time, which examines secular evidence for Jesus; a new translation and commentary of the first-century historian Josephus; and a study of Eusebius, the first Christian historian. He also has written three novels, including A Skeleton in God's Closet, a number-one national bestseller in religious fiction. Discuss It! 4The Da Vinci Code says that 'history is always written by the winners. When two cultures clash, the loser is obliterated, and the winner writes the history books --- books which glorify their own cause and disparage the conquered foe' (p. 256). Do you agree or disagree? Why? Gauging Historical Accuracy 'Many historians now believe (as do I) that in gauging the historical accuracy of a given concept, we should first ask ourselves a far deeper question: How historically accurate is history itself?' This review is from: Discussing the Da Vinci Code Discussion Guide: Examining the Issues Raised by the Book and Movie (Paperback)
**** For three years, one book has caused an almost infinite number of arguments; the Da Vinci Code. There have been quite a few books written dissecting it, and the number of web pages doing so would boggle a google search. If you have read the book and looked at the counter arguments at all, then this guide will help you lead a discussion on the subject effectively. Points are made clearly, in a linear fashion, and the appendixes are actually useful, unlike those found in many books. Even if you have no interest in the debate, there are good points made that might be intriguing. ****

This review is from: Discussing the Da Vinci Code Discussion Guide: Examining the Issues Raised by the Book and Movie (Paperback)
The DVD is full of excellent content, good filming on location, and well done technically. The discussion material can be a little long with some repetition. A group study requires purchasing additional participant books.
