Our ESL program for advanced adult speakers uses this book as a textbook in our conversation and fluency course, and as a supplement to all of our other courses. It provides great activities to get adult learners talking. The lessons are easy to adapt to your existing curriculum, or you can plan a course around them.

I teach EFL to adult students at a company in China. This book has been really useful-- most of the topics work well here and the lessons are set up so that the students talk mostly to each other in pairs or small groups. I am seeing a lot of progress among the students, and they really like the discussion structure and topics. This book is making me look good. Highly recommended!

This book is excellent for intermediate level English as a Second Language learners. It goes beyond the usual ESL textbook with chapters of conversations in typical situations. This text is good because it addresses the problems of the student who has studied English for awhile, an intermediate level student. For example, how can I start a conversation in various situations. The students using this book can learn to apply what they already know in a more free form situation, in everyday life.I am an ESL instructor and have been teaching ESL at the university level for over 20 years. I would suggest this book to my students. Need writing Help ? http://englishwritinghelp.com

Disappointing.....,
This review is from: Discussion Starters: Speaking Fluency Activities for Advanced ESL/EFL Students (Paperback)
I am a ESL Conversation Teacher overseas (who has lived overseas for 11 years). Most of the topics are completely inappropriate, devoid of cultural/religious sensitivities, thus, I found myself rewriting most of the lessons. I had no idea I was buying an extremely agenda driven book (leading questions towards author's opinion, etc.). My students were really just not that interested in discussing at what age a woman should stop having biological children, or about a girl in Florida who wanted to divorce her parents. This is a very "western" book that does not work well at all overseas, and tends to offer negative stereotype of the US. I am disappointed.

Full of good ideas, from light to more serious, but in any case, they are interesting topics. I like the vocab review. I wouldn't use one topic as the only material in class but it's a good start, to be complemented.

This is a good book for practicing for the speaking and writing sections of TOEFL. However it shouldn't be used as a sole reference.

This is such a creative book for ideas to use with more advanced ESL students. It's of interest to 21st.century learners, so the activities catch their interest, and mine! I've used it for small groups in a larger class & it has worked extremely well.
It means I don't have to invent the wheel every week, seaching for new ideas. We volunteer tutors need all the help we can get! "Discussion Starters" is my new best friend...

I was a new facilitator for an Adult ESL Conversation Class, and I needed curricular resources. However, I didn't need to buy this and another book. All the resouces I used I found on-line. I did a search on adult ESL conversation and found all the free ideas to carry me through the eight week session.
