Biography

THE RESIDENTS

Over the course of an artistic career spanning several decades, The Residents have remained a riddle of Sphinx-like proportions; cloaking their lives and music in a haze of willful obscurity, the group's members never identified themselves by name, always appearing in public in disguise (in the old days... tuxedos, top hats and giant eyeball masks) and refusing to grant media… Read more in Amazon's Residents Store

Editorial Reviews

After they recorded an instrumental program piece that purported to depict (with the help of written narration) the Eskimo lifestyle, it was kind of hard to imagine how the Residents could get much weirder. Then they came out with the 12" Diskomo EP, the A-side of which featured two tracks from Eskimo remixed in disco style. What can one do except bow before the masters of non sequitur? The B-side had its own title (Goosebump) and consisted of four tracks, all of which are completely bizarre rewrites of Mother Goose nursery rhymes. This CD reissue appends a couple of additional new remixes, including the techno-flavored "Twinkle 2000." It's not easy to critique stuff like this: Either you'll find it fascinating and hilarious, or you'll find it just plain bewildering. Relax and go with them, though, and the Residents can take you all kinds of fun places that you never imagined existed. -All Music Guide

4.0 out of 5 stars Childlike and Creepy, July 18, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Diskomo 2000 (Audio CD)
The GOOSEBUMP tracks ("Disaster", "Plants", "Farmers", and "Twinkle") are what makes this CD a must listen. I've never heard any music sounding at once silly and as wonderfully surreal as these (that even goes for the Residents' other recordings, which are all pretty strange). For these four tracks the band took nursery rhymes, played them on childern's toys, then took the resulting sounds and voices and distorted everything on the mixing board. You'll never hear "Three Blind Mice" the same way again after it's been sung in your ear in the deranged whispering voice as it appears on this album. The Residents have made similar sounding recordings before and since this album (it was originally released in the late 70's), but this is where the full potential of the band's twisted take on popular tunes is at it's zenith.

This EP alone would get 5 stars if it wasn't paired with the Diskomo tracks, which are good, if not great. The 2000 version really gets the dancefloor thumping, but the Residents have always been about twisting pop culture, not bending to it, and this track comes off a tad bit faddish. The 1992 version is my favorite, slower, yet more in line with the band's true essence.

For longtime fans: get this CD! For newcomers: Start here!
