Book Description

June 24, 2008
When Greg Parnell returns to Great Bridge, Virginia, he's hoping for a little quiet time after an adrenaline-packed undercover operation with the Fish and Wildlife Department. He is quickly disappointed when a dead body turns up floating in the Great Dismal Swamp. And this is not just any dead body. Ashley Myrtle was the wife of a prominent local politician. Greg soon discovers that Ashley, an apparent drowning victim, may have been murdered. Unfortunately, no one wants to believe him. The mayor, the woman's husband, an old boyfriend and even her coworkers seem eager to rule her death an accidental drowning. With help from a reluctant FBI agent, Greg follows a trail of small town secrets and lies to discover what really happened on that cold spring day. Refusing to give up, he discovers a vital clue deep in the swamp that leads to the killer. But justice won't be served until he can prove it was a case of murder.

From Booklist

Greg Parnell imagined that his new assignment as a field agent for the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife would be laid-back, even boring, which would be just fine by him. But when the body of an activist and wife of a local politician washes up in the Virginia swamp over which he has jurisdiction, Greg’s adrenaline starts running again. Why are all the locals so quick to dismiss her death as an accident? Greg senses there’s more to it than that and finds an unlikely helper in FBI agent Dan Brennan. Their investigation rubs the townsfolk the wrong way, but that’s not enough to keep the young Yankee (Greg) and the cocky fed (Dan) from digging. Even when the local officials concede that a murder took place, they jump too quickly to make an arrest, leaving Greg to solve the crime on his own, making more enemies along the way. Believable dialogue, an engaging hero in the manner of C. J. Box’s Joe Pickett, and lots of Virginia backcountry ambience suggest a strong series in the offing from this talented first novelist. --Mary Frances Wilkens

More About the Author

I'm a mystery writer whose first novel, In The Dismal Swamp, was published by Avalon Books in 2008. I wrote the novel while living in Virginia near the real Dismal Swamp (yes, it does exist). My protaganist, Greg Parnell, is a special agent with the US Fish and Wildlife Department. His main responsiblity is protecting our wildlife from poachers and habitat destruction. But something else is lurking in the Great Dismal Swamp. When Greg discovers a body in the swamp, everyone assumes the victim drowned...or did she?

I am currently in exile from Virginia, living in Kansas City. The BBQ is great, by the way. I am currently working on a second Greg Parnell novel, set on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read, January 31, 2009
This review is from: In The Dismal Swamp (Avalon Mystery) (Hardcover)
I am not normally a big reader of mysteries, but this one kept me engaged because of its characters and setting, as well as a clever little surprise at the end. The main character, Greg, who hails from my hometown of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, was tough, but vulnerable enough to be interesting, and his relationship with an older FBI man provided some good dialogue. The Dismal Swamp is in a sense a character in the novel, and after reading it I'd really like to visit. The local references and the references to Northeastern Pennsylvania will be of special interest to some readers. Also a good read for the green crowd.

I am not a mystery fan for the most part, but I have to say, this book is a delight threaded with humor and that old "Dick Tracy" feel!! The characters are full and real. I enjoyed getting to know them yet, they were not overly predictable. The descriptions of the Dismal Swamp were realistic enough for me to want to go visit it. It is an entertaining story. I loved it and I am looking forward to Mr. Balester's next novel!!!
