Past and present collide in Seattle-area mystery story,
By A Customer
This review is from: Dismissed With Prejudice (Mass Market Paperback)
When Tadeo Kurobashi, a respectable Japanese-American businessman, appears in these pages, he is already a corpse. However, the reader gradually learns more about him from the perspective of his loyal friends, sworn enemy, reclusive and mysterious wife, and estranged daughter. Did he commit suicide (hara-kiri) because of impending bankruptcy or was he murdered? Seattle police detective J.P. Beaumont undertakes to find out and to solve intertwining mysteries as well. The story ranges geographically from Seattle to Spokane with a bit of Chicago Mafia mixed in. The past enters in with snippets about occupied Japan after World War II and the detention camps for Japanese-Americans during the war. All-in-all, an engrossing mystery with believable characters. Think I'll try other mysteries by this author and about the J.P. Beaumont character.

Easy reading...a good story.,

I am a fan of J. A. Jance's Joanne Brady series and was first introduced to Det. Beaumont in Partner's In Crime; however, I first read the majority of the Brady series. Dismissed With Prejudice is only the second book in the Beaumont series that I have read. It was a good, quick and light read. Good beach or airport material as it is easy to put down and come back to.

I've read many of the books in the J.P. Beaumont series, and while I have enjoyed them all, some more than others, this seemed disjointed to me. It was OK.

I came to J.P. Beaumont by way of the Joanna Brady series. Somehow DISMISSED WITH PREJUDICE is a low standard for J.A. Jance. The beginning is fascinating when Tadeo Kurodashi, a Japanese businessman is discovered dead from a ritual suicide. J.P. is assigned to the case and heeds the remarks of a Japanese colligue that the death scene is staged. The reader learns much about Mr. Kurodashi and J.P.'s creeping problem with booze, but the motives are vague which leads to a fuzzy ending. If you're a fan of J.P. Beaumont it is a fast read, but doesn't add to the strength of the series. And I think this is one of the better ones. However, I had this feeling that the author was never completely in control of the plot, and the ending didn't come neatly together the way it does in the best mysteries. The motive seemed grossly inadequate -- even murderers usually have an understandable reason. The plot involves a Japanese businessman who is on the verge of bankruptcy who is found dead -- apparently a ritual suicide. A Japanese crime scene person doesn't think it looks right for that, and the family insists the man (Tadeo) would never do that no matter how bad things were. J.P. Beaumont, the tough Seattle detective assigned to the case (who habitually bucks his incompetent bosses), takes their word for it and treats it like a murder. Shortly after the murder, two individuals connected to Tadeo are viciously attacked, and Beaumont finds himself trying to find the motive for both crimes and to discover who did this. There is a side plot involving Beaumont's growing realization that he may have a drinking problem. This was a book I definitely enjoyed getting back to, that moved along quickly. Somehow when I got to the ending, however, I was disappointed as I expected more sense to emerge than did. Somehow the last couple of chapters seemed kind of flung together. I also think more careful background research would have improved this book. I had the distinct impression that more was needed vis-a-vis the Japanese connection.

I go no where with out this book stuck under my arm. It takes me about a week to read a J.P. Beaumont novel. I cannot wait to get on to the next one. J.A. Jance knows how to keep her readers interested. I think I have it all figured out, and I never do. If you like mysteries this series is for you.

I expected a lady lawyer, not a dude detective,

Having read three Ali Reynolds and two Joanna Brady books by this author, and going by the legal titles of the J.P. Beaumont books, I did honestly expect an altogether different protagonist here. However, I will say that I was pleasantly surprised at how well the lady author handles a male protagonist. However, the story was ultimately disappointing to me. The ending especially was a letdown.Furthermore, my number one disappointment was the author's failure to stay more with the victim's daughter, Kimi, as a character. After the character's horrible experience and her antipathy toward her deceased father, I desperately wanted to know more of her readjustmnt and of her later consideration of her father. So yeah, the book's okay and I want to read more J.P. Beaumont stories, but this did disapoint me. This should be tagged "J.P. Beaumont", but Amazon.com seems to think this is a Joanna Brady mystery

The book began well but ended badly. Nothing connected for me, and after reading the ending twice, still don't understand what the point was. The book could have been so much better. I'll try another J.P. Beaumont book hoping this was just a bad one.
