Cute and Fun Disney Christmas Album, but Could be Better, January 4, 2010
This review is from: Disney Holiday Magic 2009 (Audio CD)
I hate to admit that this is the first Disney Christmas album I've gotten around to purchasing, and so I can't compare it to previous ones, but here is my best assessment anyway of this 2009 Target exclusive CD release.
There are 12 tracks on Disney Holiday Magic, and many of them are sung by Disney's most popular characters (not counting the princesses, who get their own Christmas CD releases which I still need to get). Mickey Mouse and his pals and Winnie the Pooh and Tigger do the singing here, making this an ideal purchase for holiday car rides with the children (or just huge Disney fanatics like myself). However, some awkward inclusions are thrown in, which is my one issue with this CD (besides the swift running time these youth-aimed albums usually have). There are three titles sung by non-toons whom I doubt you've ever heard of, one of them being the all new "Let the Snow Come Down", and frankly, I just don't think two of them fit in with the style of this CD. Here is the track listing:
1. We Wish You A Merry Christmas, sung by the Disney Holiday Chorus
2. Here Comes Santa Claus, sung by Mickey and Minnie
3. Jingle Bell Rock, sung by Ludwig Von Drake
4. A Holly Jolly Christmas, sung by Craig Toungate
5. Deck the Halls, sung by Mickey and the Gang
6. Jingle Bells, sung by Pooh and Tigger
7. The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, sung by Daisy Duck, Huey, Louie, and Dewey
8. White Christmas, sung by Goofy
9. The Twelve Days of Christmas, sung by Pooh
10. From All of Us to All of You, sung by Jiminy Cricket and Mickey
11. Mistletoe, sung by Brenna Miles
12. Let the Snow Come Down, sung by Ayana Haviv
The songs performed by beloved Disney characters are cute and enjoyable for the most part. I do have to say that Huey, Dewey, and Louie have awful singing voices though, and it would have been nice to hear Donald on the CD somewhere instead. The biggest highlights for me, of course, being a big Disney fanatic as I mentioned before, are undoubtedly the Ludwig Von Drake performance of "Jingle Bell Rock" (perfect for him) and Jiminy and Mickey singing the Disney classic "From All of Us to All of You". If you are a huge Pooh fan, I'll mention that the version of "Twelve Days of Christmas" here is performed with a Winnie the Pooh spin on it. As for the non-toon tracks I mentioned, Craig Toungate's take on Holly Jolly Christmas isn't an awkward inclusion style-wise, but it will certainly have many trying to figure out which Disney character is singing, and so wasn't the smartest inclusion. Yeah, they could have used Donald on that one maybe. Oh how about my fave character, Uncle Scrooge? Anyway, the songs I have more of an issue with are the very "pop" sounding "Mistletoe" and "Let the Snow Come Down". Had these songs been performed by "Disney Channel Girls", perhaps I could forgive them for squeezing them in (or at least understand it better), though they still would be out of place, but here are two young ladies I have never heard of (though Ayana Haviv does a lot of work for film). "Mistletoe" is an original R&B-type pop song written and performed here by Brenna Miles. "Let the Snow Come Down" has that sorta pleasant but less than memorable sound of something that might accompany a new Disney direct-to-video film release. No big woop.
Disney Holiday Magic 2009 comes with a nice booklet that includes all the lyrics and unfolds to be a poster of Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto in a holiday setting. Though, this booklet is also the cover insert, so if you hang the small poster up, you lose that. The cover of this Christmas album features an image of Mickey in a Santa suit standing in the snow with a bag of toys. Overall, this is a nice little CD if you don't pay too much for it. The Ludwig Von Drake and Jiminy Cricket songs make it well worthwhile. It suffers a bit from not including Donald and especially for having 3 songs not sung by Disney characters or familiar names, two of them being pop songs at the end of the disc that don't fit the style of the rest of the CD. I appreciate Disney trying to showcase new talent and all, but these would be more fitting on a pop-themed Disney holiday CD.
