If you have the portal from the last version of Disney Infinity, you don't need this whole Starter Pack. The portal part number in this starter pack is the exact same part as the portal from the last Disney Infinity. You just need the new 2.0 game itself and the new figures. Save yourself some dough if you can and get the figures you want.

The original Disney Infinity was great. Open world roaming? It's like GTA, but for kids! My son & I loved the Pirates of the Caribbean playset most of all... the pirate ships, the freedom to explore, the swords and pistols - great fun! Looked absolutely amazing on a Xbox 360. The Incredibles playset was a close second with the super powers, and the Metroville environment.

The DI 2.0 Avengers playset (which comes with the Starter Pack) is like the Incredibles playset in many ways, except it's Manhattan & not Metroville. And it's the Avengers instead of the Incredibles. Monster spawning (where you could not take many steps in Metroville without a swarm of bad bots attacking you) is very much toned down in Manhattan, which is either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your opinion of fighting the bad guys.

Characters? At our house, we have (as of now) the starting 3 (Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow) plus Captain America. (Father Noel will provide us with the Guardians of the Galaxy set at Christmas.) In some ways, Thor and Captain America remind me of each other with the way the Hammer or Shield works, while Black Widow and Iron Man have similar ranged attacks.

Each character has their own Skill Tree, which allows you to create different "builds" of their characters. With limited skill points, you can't do everything well. You have to specialize... hand-to-hand? mobility? healing/party support? ranged combat? All have their pluses & minuses. This is a huge plus in DI 2.0.

ALSO, DI 1.0 characters like Captain Jack Sparrow & Mr. Incredible? YES, they have skill trees as well! So in the Toy Box mode, you can build them up how you like!

Other DI 1.0 compatibility issues? Those little plastic power disk? They STILL WORK with DI 2.0.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as compatible with 1.0 figures as I had thought. September 28, 2014
Platform for Display:Xbox 360| Edition:Standard|Verified Purchase
My complaint with the original Disney Infinity is that you couldn't take figures from different playsets and put them in each other's worlds; you couldn't take the characters from The Incredibles and play them in Monster's Inc., for instance. When I purchased 2.0 for my family I thought, "Hey, they say that the 1.0 figures are compatible! Time to buy the Frozen pack (Anna & Elsa) for my daughter and have them rock out in The Avenger's playset! I mean *really*, how awesome would that be??"

Well, since Disney Infinity 2.0 still has the same limitations as 1.0, not awesome at all. Which is so weird because it's not as if the characters are vastly different, outside their powersets. For instance, all characters have a melee attack, a ranged attack, jump and dodge (and fly, if your character is a flier like Iron Man and Thor). Heck, the 1.0 characters now have the level-up skill tree system appended to match their 2.0 counterparts. Why can't they engage in each other's different environments? It's not like they're not compatible!

Still, it's fun to work the Toy Box, except that the community content is pretty not-fun. The stuff these people are putting out is either not translating well into my game or I'm just not getting it but there's a definite lack of focus regarding goals and a start-to-finish mechanic. You see, I'm not that inventive and imaginative myself, I just want to play a cool game (which the Avenger's game included is, and I suppose I'll have to invest in the Spider-man and Guardians of the Galaxy sets, too). I'll download more, but from what I've seen of the "Developer's Choice" so far, I am not amused (get it? Because we play games for the amusement? Ha ha? No? Okay...

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring your favorite characters to life! September 29, 2014

We had the first version of Disney INFINITY and couldn't wait for 2.0. This is just as easy to use as the original version with all new characters. The only draw back is only being able to use 1.0 characters in the toy box, and not in the worlds, but the kids still have fun with the older characters.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great fun, with some limits February 26, 2015

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
My 11 year old son sold his Skylanders set to purchase this back in Sept. To date he has purchased every Marvel 2.0 figure, and also Dash Jack Sparrow and Mike Wazowski, and waits with bated breath for each new character. He enjoys playing with the figures and doing the missions, and just looking at the action figures. The graphics are nice and the dialog of each of the characters is entertaining.

The missions are fun and he enjoys doing them. So far, I believe he has completed all of them (although I am not sure about the Avengers). While he enjoys the missions he wishes he could interchange the characters from other groups into the missions. Hulk can't play in the Guardians of the Galaxy missions, and Groot can't play in the Avengers missions. Part of the appeal of the Infinity set is the ability for different characters to interact with each other. Disney never mentioned this could only take place in the toy box.

Speaking of the toy box, this is where my son spends most of his time these days. Within the toy box he can add whatever monsters he wants and have any hero battle them. He enjoys this, but wishes he could do this in the missions. The slow loading tim is also an issue. We almost always play two players and it can take 30+ seconds for the characters to load.

There is so much more Disney could do to expand this set, and I hope they do. More missions, better interactivity between characters, and making sidekicks more customizable. Unfortunately, I have heard they are already working on the 3.0 system. This probably means that other than new characters not much will change in the game.
