Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Jam-packed with more than 900 entries, the big, colorful Disney Picture Dictionary is designed to help children through several stages of learning. The youngest kids look at the alphabetized words along with pictures featuring their favorite Disney characters to help grasp the meanings. Older children can delve deeper with the definitions accompanying each word and picture, as well as sentences showing usage. The "A" pages feature, for example, "alone," with this definition: "You are alone when you are by yourself." A picture of Lilo (from Lilo and Stitch) lying on a blanket with a record player is captioned: "When Lilo is alone, she likes to listen to her Elvis records." "Horse," "key," "mistake," "sleep," "yesterday," and "zoo" are similarly treated. Characters from Monsters, Inc., A Bug’s Life, Toy Story, as well as Mickey Mouse, Ariel, Bambi, and Donald Duck, romp through the book, seeming to jump out of the pages in their enthusiasm to encourage little readers-to-be. An alphabet strip runs down the outer edges of each page for reference. This is a fun first dictionary, not intended to be comprehensive so much as an introduction to the world of words. (Ages 3 to 7) --Emilie Coulter

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous for Language Development!, June 23, 2005
By
This review is from: Disney Picture Dictionary (Disney Learning) (Hardcover)
My 16 month old daughter loves this book! It was given to her as a gift for her first birthday. At first, I thought she was too young for it and planned to put it away for her until she was bit older. But, she began to point at it enthusiastically so I let her look at it. That was 4 months ago, and not a day has gone by that she hasn't pulled it out to look at all the beautiful pictures. She enjoys turning the pages and pointing at the different illustrations. We started by simply labeling the words that she pointed to. Over time, she has learned to recognize dozens of words independently and now actually says them. Because she is so young, and is used to handling board books, many pages have ripped. I have had to tape up most of the pages!!! She loves this book so much, I am planning to buy another one to keep in pristine condition for her when she get older!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun way to enhance vocabulary, September 5, 2006
This review is from: Disney Picture Dictionary (Disney Learning) (Hardcover)
This book will be instantly appealing to most kids. The pictures are really precious and brightly colored. They did a great job including art from almost all of the Disney animated movies, including the newer Pixar movies to the classics. Because of this I think adults will enjoy this book as well. Each section begins with the letter (both upper and lower case) and then has several pages of pictures with words that begin with that letter. With each word there is a picture, a defintion and then a sentence using the word. Some of the pictures and sentences are really creative! I like that the words include words other than nouns. There are verbs and adjectives as well. You could start this book with your child as early as you like (I don't think it's ever too early to start reading with your child) although the book is rather large and the pages could be easily torn by younger readers. And I think this is a book that a child could enjoy for a very long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this book!, April 16, 2009

Mum to Mr. B (Columbus, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Disney Picture Dictionary (Disney Learning) (Hardcover)
I originally saw this book at my pediatrician's office and fell in love with it because it was so colorful and wonderfully written. Once I got home I got online and found it on Amazon and to my delight it was a much better price than what was on the book itself. I immediately ordered one for my 5 year old son's birthday and 4 more for all his friends with up coming birthdays since it was free shipping. This book makes the kids questions so much easier to explain because it gives simple definitions and also uses the word in a sentence. I can't say enough about the pictures, they are fantastic!! Since giving them as gifts I've had several people ask where I got this book because they want to buy them as gifts for other friends. Just a great book all around!
