In the package, the U-Command Wall-E looks great, and for the MSRP it's a grood deal too. However, there are a couple of design issues that can seriously detract from the play value of this toy. The worst is that Wall-E is very unstable, which means that unless you are running him on a perfectly flat, smooth surface with absolutely no obstructions around him, he'll spend most of his time on his back like a flailing turtle. This is true even on very short pile commercial carpeting. Also, you should know that since this uses an infrared remote control, the R/C features generally only work if you're pointing the control directly at the U-Command Wall-E. Most kids will not expect or understand this limitation, which may lead to frustration during play.

I still think it's one of the best Wall-E toys made, simply because it offers so many features for the price. And, with a little creative inginuity, you can solve the instibility problem by attaching a small stabilizer to Wall-E's back that will prevent him from falling over while he is dancing, turning, reversing direction, or contending with an obstruction in his path. Once you've overcome that issue, this is will almost certainly become one of your favorite Wall-E toys.

4.0 out of 5 stars Our Wall-E is lots of fun, December 29, 2008

This was one of my five year old daughter's presents. It wound up being one of her favorites and one of our favorites, too.

The first thing I want to mention is that our Wall-E is stable. I'm not sure why, but he is. I've seen some videos on youtube where the robot falls over whenever he hits something. Not only doesn't ours fall over, he goes from our flat hard kitchen floor into our higher pile carpeted floor without falling. He also has no problem moving around the carpeted floor at all, unlike some of the reviewers mentioned. Our robot stays upright for the most part (out of over 2 hours playing time, he may have fallen over twice at the most).

The remote is simple to use. Wall-E has a sensor on both the back and the front of him, so we've had no trouble at all with him sensing the remote's signals. I think we've been up to 20 feet away from him and he still can read the signal and perform accordingly.

He's made out of hard (but brittle) plastic, but seems made pretty well. His arms go up and down as he moves and his treads are helped along by 2 little wheels on his underside. His treads DO move, however, so those are the main source of his motion.

He talks, sings, dances, and has many movement options. Additionally, you can program a sequence of up to 15 movements for him to follow at any given time. I'm pretty certain that you can only have ONE sequence at a time, and not more. But, we haven't even used the programming except for testing to see if it works. My daughter has a blast using the remote and making him do what she wants him to do. He only turns to the left, but has several left turn options at any time. So, if you want to have him turn or veer to the right, you may have to make him almost to a full 360 degree turn and then quickly use the straight arrow key right when you get him to where you want him to actually be. It's simple enough for a young child to do and learn fairly quickly.

All in all, this is a great toy and I'm very glad we bought it. Much better than a remote control car or dinosaur in our house! The remote is easy to work with (takes 3 AAA batteries) and the robot itself is very responsive (takes 4 aaa batteries).

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun toy, needs some tweeks, August 8, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:2.0 out of 5 stars

The U-Command wall e is a great toy but as other reviewers have stated, it is highly unstable on carpeting. it got so annoying that my husband removed the inner wheels and replaced them with the plastic tabbing that came with the package where the ties were held (long black plastic things with holes in it). since that minor tweek wall-e has not fallen yet, and the enjoyment of the toy has very much increased.

aside from the tilt issue, this toy is a great deal of fun to play with. the expressive quality is amazing, holding true to the wall-e that we all fell in love with at the theater. He has a very amusing dance sequence.

If given the chance, I'd buy this toy again.

I loooove the WALL-E movie and was really looking forward to the "programmable" quality to this toy. A few disappointments, though:
I've yet to hear him say "WALL-E" or "TA-DA!" (He does say "EV-A");
You can't really pick what he's going to say or pick his "expressions" (one command button for all voice options, one command button for all eye expressions, etc.);
His dance is not even to the song from the movie;
His arms and head movements cannot be remote controlled; He does not move backward and only turns one direction. He's a bit difficult to control (and, yes, tips over easily).
I guess, being of the Star Wars toy generation, I just expected more control, more ease and more connection to the movie (I had a great remote-controlled R2-D2 as a kid.)
Had I known all this, I probably would've chosen the U-Dance WALL-E or U-Interact WALL-E instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars A lot of fun, November 3, 2008

For the price, this toy is a lot of fun. We have carpet and tile and unless he hits your foot, a shoe, or some other low obstruction, we haven't had him fall over a lot. He runs quite well on our carpet and tile, even over the little raised border between the rooms with ease. His movements are pretty fluid too. And I like the fact his treads actually move, were has other Wall-E treads were fake. You can program it, but only one reprogram at a time. We have a Pleo too and Pleo is light years ahead of this this one. This is more a toy than a robot. But my 10 year old daughter and her cousins are having a good time with it, so its shortcomings pale in comparison to the fun times they are having.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR OLDER CHILDREN, December 10, 2008

I was thrilled when WALL-E was on my doorstep yesterday evening. This has to be one of the cutest little robots I have ever seen. WALL-E is very easy to opperate ( it was harder to get out of the box then it was to get him started ). The packaging it really cute, the robot is "very" fast ( good idea to make sure you know where he is going to go and move things out of the way first before giving the command )and a lot of fun to see him running off across the floor doing tricks, the remote is really nice and seems sturdy for drops, and the robot itself is so cute that you feel he is sitting still with no commands looking at you. The detail of the toy is really wonderful. They went way out of their way to make WALL-E look so alive with the rust spots, dirt marks, and moveable fingers. I would not even think of this for a child under the age of 6. It is a very sensitive toy and even the slightest drop I fear might be the end of one of his eye's or arm's. Outdoor play would also be a real no no as well but maybe on a smooth driveway or very wide sidewalk ( I would think twice about the sidewalk since the robot goes so fast ). If you are a toy collector then this would be a really great addition to a collection. WALL-E is heavy and a really cute robot but he does have a real problem trying to go on carpet. If you put a heavy neckless on him, he does stay upright a lot better. All in all..The U-Command WALL-E is a real joy to play with but I would get it for an older child or even an adult. It is really a cute little robot and makes you laugh and love him just like you did in the movie.

I just purchased this exact same toy, U Command Wall-E, from the Disney Store online for 65 bucks. I don't understand why it's selling so high on Amazon! After shipping and tax, my purchase was $79.

Buy the toy, but not from here!

It's the day after Christmas and Wall-E is having problems with his gears. The poor little guy is getting stuck on the carpet and his gears are clicking like they are slipping or grinding inside. I hope this isn't happening to anyone else, because that means he was probably under designed in the gear department and all the Wall-E U Commands out there are going to have this "clicking".
