Wows from kids and parents, curses from the baker...,

I purchased this based on firm instructions from my soon-to-be four-year-old daughter, who was thrilled at the prospect of the 6 princess figurines on the cake for her party. When it arrived, there were no directions, although the description had promised complete instructions. I wrote to the vendor and received a .pdf of the instructions in color within 2 days of my email. The good: this a a big hit at the party. All the kids loved it, and I received a lot of compliments from the adults at the party. The disappointing: the turrets are not solid plastic as I had thought- they are very thin plastic sheets that you have to roll-up and "secure" with a fairly chintzy tab/slot system. There are solid plastic collars at the bottom and top that each roll fits into. Cutting the roll to fit the height of the cake is not easy, as it is hard to judge how it will fit before you cut it. The entire arrangement balances somewhat precariously on the corners of the cake. Serious frosting fill/repair was required. The rest of the decorating wasn't too bad, although there are some blank spots on the cake that need frosting or sugar flowers. If you are like me and think it looks pretty easy until you actually try it, just buy the pre-made sugar flowers at the craft store. I used the Wilton butter cake recipe for the cake, strawberry cream for the filling and the traditional buttercream recipe. I think you could use a regular cake mix, as this is a pretty sturdy structure, but the store-bought frosting will be too soft. I also bought the Wilton frosting colors recommended in the instructions. We made the base color pink instead of white and used violet for the trim. It looked nice, and now I have a life-time supply of these food colors. So, in all a very attractive cake after all the fuss of assembling it is over.

Pretty Cake,

I made this cake before, true you do have to ask the seller for instructions. You cut and stack cake. It's not that hard and the cake is very pretty. It cost less to buy this kit than buy the figurines individually, they are pricey. The kit comes with them all.

I used this cake kit for my daughter's 4th birthday. I used a 10 x 10 (2) and a 6 x 6 (1) cake to build the castle. Since the turrets are plastic sheets that you fold, I also scotch taped them to secure them further. I put purple drop flowers around the bottom edges of the 10 and 6 inch cakes. The cake got great reviews even though I did not include the purple roses and green bushes as seen in the photo. I was really happy with the results. I would recommend to sticking with what works well with for you. I also added heart sugar shapes to the castle which were a nice touch. If your skills are limited like myself, I would go with the less is more approach. The turrets are already beautifully decorated.
