Glitzy and fun princess vanity, November 24, 2007
Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
My parents bought this as an early holiday present for my four-year old daughter. She absolutely loves it. We opened it early because my parents wanted to see her enjoy the present. When my daughter realized that the box near the fireplace held this vanity she yelled, "Oh. My. God. This is what I always wanted! I always wanted this, Poppy!"
It took a little while to put together-- the screws don't really screw in easily, but after it was put together it looked wonderful. It's definitely one of the prettiest vanities for sale and it works very well. There is a magnet in the wand that causes the compartments to open up and reveal either pretend nailpolish, lipgloss, a powder puff and something else (escapes me right now) when compartments are touched with the wand and it really does seem as if this is done by magic. We were just in Disney World last week and my daughter went to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique so we actually have a bunch of REAL disney makeup I will use to replace the pretend stuff. (If you get a chance to take your daughters here, do so-- it's a great experience!) The on/off switch is a large gem that lights up when the item is "on". When the gem is in place, in the on position, the vanity has several lights that sparkle on and off. And, it's then that the princesses-- Cinderella, Belle, and Aurora are revealed in the magic mirrors. They all speak and say pleasant things in a very clear/non-electronic voice.
The absolute ONLY complaints I have with this toy is that it's made of the cheaper-type brittle plastic, rather than the nicer "Step 2" or "little Tikes" plastic. It's the kind of plastic that can break if you trip over it. So, it's not tremendously durable although, admittedly, the vanity will be against a wall rather than in the center of a room. The stool it comes with, too, is made the same way, obviously, but it seems to be a bit more durable just because of how it's molded and put together.
Also, as gorgeous and "princess-y" the vanity table is, the drawer is really pretty useless. It doesn't slide easily and is very shallow. Still, one can stick some jewelry in there, I suppose, or some other little treasures. The stool, too, looks quilted, but it's not. And, that is always a pet peeve to me. Don't do fake fabric! Either do real fabric, or mold the plastic to look like something else-- but not quilted fabric. Maybe that's silly, but I always thought that looked so cheap.
Anyways, these gripes I have don't minimize the play factor for my daughter who really loves this toy. We've only had it three days, but she's spent a lot of time sitting at it and using the wand and playing with it. When we actually get it home to our house (we're visiting the grandparents), I'm sure she'll still use it even if she stops playing with it as much since she can brush her hair there, put her jewelry box on it, and use it when she dresses up in her princess dresses (which she loves to do).
All in all, this is really a great item.

Just a little trouble, December 26, 2007
Durability:4.0 out of 5 stars Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
My 3 year old daughter got this for christmas. We just finished playing with it.
Its very cute, went together with no real issues. My daughter loves it. We have transfered all of her dress up jewelry to it and added some real nail polish and a few little things.
My only issue with it is this. The doors have a hard time opening. I have deduced that they "Magic" is a magnet latch. But on two of my doors, the round ones, the doors just won't open. I was ready to pry mine open with a screw driver (Glad I didn't because they are spring loaded and would have never closed again) when my daughter laid the wand on top of the symbol and sort of pressed down on it. Voila, the music played and it opened. We still get the left one to open 1 out of 10 tries. There is no other way to open it, no trouble shooting info in the box.
EDIT: After several days of playing with this I realized what I was doing wrong. I was holding the wand upside down and moving it too fast over the compartments. Those of you saying its not working, flip your wand over and do it slower. Now I know what I am doing, it works great! The side with the screws should be facing UP. So now my only complaint with it is that the instructions are poorly written.
I was sure mine was broken. I almost broke one of the lids off with a butter knife trying to get into it. I am so glad I did not. Once I knew what I was doing, it worked perfect. Sound, lights, talking, magicly opening boxes, the whole nine yards. This is a great little toy, the ONLY thing she got for Christmas she is still consistantly playing with. My advice, BE PATIENT!

Buyer Beware, August 11, 2008
Durability:2.0 out of 5 stars Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars Educational:1.0 out of 5 stars
Having read numerous reviews of this product, I knew problems existed which could affect the performance. I decided to buy it anyway, hoping that MAYBE I would be one of the lucky ones. I have to say I was angry and greatly disappointed in this product. The wires must have been pinched during the manufacturing process, or maybe it was the way the UPS delivery man threw it onto the porch, but either way it was a complete rip-off. When inserting the "crystal" to activate the sounds/display it just makes a "twirling" noise over and over and over and over again. And then it simply dies. No faces appear, no voices are heard. And to get the magic drawers to open I had to beat them to death with the wand just to pry them loose. Luckily my four year old niece was just happy to have a vanity where she could sit and pretend to put on her makeup. I am sad that Disney endorses such cheap craftmanship and would have returned the product if shipping hadn't cost an arm and a leg.
