This is a good educational toy, however, there is really precious little learning component to some, only some, of the games. The Jedi Math is a lot of shooting asteroids and only a little time of the game spent inside the starship matching the correct numbers to an equation. The Math Missions game is much stronger, every part of every game has learning involved, there is a shopping game where you have to match the correct equation to the listed price at the register, which teaches two things: math and the value of items. We had a good talk about what things cost in our home after they played this game. It was a good lesson for them to learn. Unfortunately, there is no way to know before you buy, so be sure the read the reviews of the individual games before you buy them. ALSO, see the manufacturer's own website; there is no reason to spend double than the amount offered at the manufacturer's place of business, which you can find at google, or just add a dot com after the company's name to get to where they have this item currently at a slash, but even regularly it is less than half of what you see here, it is for this reason alone that I only gave one star as a warning to check around before you buy.

this is a wonderful product. i must say though, this is not a product to compare to a nintendo ds, and it shouldnt be. its way cheaper and its primary focus is education. the screen graphics are great, as long as you arent comparing them-this should be the toy you get BEFORE a video game. i would recommend getting it for a 3-4 year old. my daughter has had it since 3 1/2 and is now 6, still using it, although we arent gaming people. i would think once a child is 6 with other systems like the DS, they may lose interest. otherwise, i think it would be okay to use up until 7, not sure about 8 though.
most games are self explanatory, and do not need parental help. just read reviews of the games to get a true idea of what age they will suit. there is such a huge variety, you really will be able to find some titles which your child will love. really, i have nothing bad to say about it. for the price and educational value, you cant beat it.

My now 6 year old daughter received this for her 5th birthday. She has now graduated to the DSI but still picks this up now and then to play it. It's a good educational toy with solid available software. It's not going to teach your kids to read or make their beds, it's just going to occupy a bit of their time with something more useful than watching Hannah Montana all day! (I don't recommend the Hannah Montana game by the way) Pick up the Kindergarten game and you won't be disappointed. Yes, it's the most expensive Leapster game but it's worth it. LeapFrog Leapster® Educational Game: Kindergarten
In the year of ownership, it's been dropped, made in on 2 trips to Disneyland where is occupied her time in long lines. It's been bumped, scratched, loaned, lost, found, taken away and given back again and it's still going strong. My sister is a nurse in pediatrics and I usually donate my daughter's outgrown toys to the hospital. This one looks like it will find a good home for many more years there.

We purchased this for my daughter for Christmas. She used it maybe four or five times and it broke. She was playing a game and it just shut off. I tried charging and replacing batteries but nothing worked, the screen was dead. Very expensive toy to only get a few weeks out of it. I would not recommend this at all!

My daughter wanted a Nintendo DS for Christmas, but since she is only 4 1/2 I could not justify the expense. I opted for the princess leapster 2 and my daughter loves it. It has a good mixture of education and fun. My husband even played it. I believe that this toy is just that, a toy, so I don't expect it to teach my daughter as much as I expect it to supplement her learning. In that respect, this was a wonderful purchase.
