This could just be my fault too and not so much the item...but most items are not this hard to work!

Great concept, and our daughter loves it - when it works. Would be interesting to see the percentage of Mix Maxes that are functioning properly after 6 months of use.

Mix Max #1 had problems after 3 weeks - screen froze and the clock stopped at 5:33am. We were able to return it for an even exchange.

Mix Max #2 worked for 2 1/2 months, then it started having inermittent blank screens, the Disney card movies would not play ("file not supported" messages appeared) and the time locked at 5:33am. The center play button is not working properly - when pressed it does not always play until you find a "sweet spot" that it accepts.

Daughter was so attached to it that against better judgement we bought Mix Max #3. The 5:33 "feature" is still there. When you reset the time it appears correctly, but the first time you cycle the power - you are back to 5:33. After 3 1/2 months the intermittent blank screens started. 3 sides of the "mickey ears" used for navigation stopped working after about 4 months (1 hour in to a 7 hour airline flight), so now our daughter can only get music or a movie by reinserting a card and IF the autoplay decides to work. Disappointing since this was our third Mix Max and we bought accesories and all the movie/music cards with purchase #1.

We tried calling repeatedly for support for the issues with all 3 - were told each time that they "looking into" the problems, but have no fix and because we were outside the 90 days from initial purchase were out of luck as far as a replacement or exchange.

Great idea, cool features - if you get one that lasts longer than 3 months. Next time we will spend a more for a stable player from a company that supports their products. Only buy this if you do not mind having it break or have intermittent errors, and if you do not need reliable support or customer service.

I gave this to my 7 year old boy who has been wanting an ipod. This is kid friendly, great screen, and easy to use. I can either download songs from websites such as URGE or buy the cards used for the device. He has movie cards also that he uses and the quality is excellent. Great device and would recommend to anyone!

Have 2 mix maxes, 1 Hanna Montana, 1 Pirates. Hanna works. Pirates can no longer be seen thru the USB. Not a PC issue. Pirates worked first time. Loaded some music. Also setup Hanna at the same time, loaded music.

When it came time to rehook Pirates mp3 to recharge, PC no longer sees device. Hanna still connects fine. Tried on 3 other PC's with Diff OS's XP, Vista, and 2000: each time Hanna works, Pirates don't.

Called 888 #, listen to muzak, have to leave message for call back. No call back. Try again, same result except mailbox is full, can't even leave message. Endless loop of wait, and no one there. Need a basic return but I am not optimistic.

We got this for our 9-year-old daughter last year for Christmas and it has worked perfectly. She only has one movie for it, but loves to use it as an MP3 player and it's a lot more kid-friendly than an ipod (plus it plays MP3's unlike ipod). We haven't had any problems with it at all. The only complaint I would have is that there are very few movies available for it and the ones that are available are expensive; however, this has nothing to do with the reliability or functionality of the player, so it gets 5 stars.

Well I chose a middle rating because I am really not sure what to think. Thank goodness for amazon's hassle free returns and awesome customer service, but as far as the device I was so happy to receive it and surprise my niece after I have put her fav music in it. I charged it in one of the ports of my computer and it didn't recognize the device. I still have windows vista on my laptop...I don't see how it doesn't recognize it. So I make sure that the port that it is hooked up to can charge this thing.(I even tried the port with my iPod and phone. Ok it works.) So I charge it for an hour and check on it. Nothing. I google it and someone had said a couple of hours. So I wait another hour and turn it on. It should have enough charge to let me know that it is charging on the display screen like it said it would say. Again... NOTHING. So I read some other reviews and one person said she bought 2 and on one of them had the same problem as i did and on the other, it charged. So I am at a point where I will be returning this one and waiting for a different one. I hope this doesn't happen to me again. I will update my review when I get one that works ( it will never have 5 stars from me) or i'll be giving it a one star for inconvenience and getting my hopes up.

UPDATE: ok so I got the new one and geez, it showed that it was charging the moment I put the cord in. Mp3 music was very easy to put on and also pics too. I ended up just downloading Magic Ripper trial and using that to put movies in since it has a selection specifically for mix max. Just don't close it on your computer since its just a trial. I tried using another video converter and it just got way too complicated. Plus it didn't play. So I have a bunch of songs on it and 2 movies and some pics on a 2gb disk.

This has been a great investment. We have owned now for over a year with no problems.

I also got my hands on loads of movies from: [...]

Great for car or plane rides. It's used by both a 5 and 10 year old, so it accomodates a huge age range.
