A Spectacular Failure by Erich Kunzel
on July 29, 2009
I love Disney music. However what Erich Kunzel did to some of the most beloved Disney music is tragic to say the least. Most people will find this review a bit harsh, perhaps I am. However, I have a vast collection of Disney music and by far this is the worst money I ever spent. I did not even transfer the CD to my iPod when I bought it.
My main reason for not liking this CD is that both the chorus and orchestra are too tied to the beat (which is rather slow and sedate). The life is droned out of the normally light and fun Disney music. There is little emotional expression from the vocalists and much of their talent seems to be focussed on providing a perfect performance that leaves little room for the spirit of the Disney music. When I mentioned my dislike of this CD to other people, i found they all had the same issue with Erich Kunzel as a conductor. Everything he conducts is tight and controlled. I heard a sample of him directing a piece by Puccini and Kunzel had droned the life out of that piece as well.
I am sad to report that this CD is not worth the price one pays for it. There is much better Disney music out there. But that instead.
