Book Description

September 21, 2011 078646271X 978-0786462711
This biographical dictionary is devoted to the actors who provided voices for all the Disney animated theatrical shorts and features from the 1928 Mickey Mouse cartoon Steamboat Willie to the 2010 feature film Tangled. More than 900 men, women, and child actors from more than 300 films are covered, with biographical information, individual career summaries, and descriptions of the animated characters they have performed. Among those listed are Adriana Caselotti, of Snow White fame; Clarence Nash, the voice of Donald Duck; Sterling Holloway, best known for his vocal portrayal of Winnie the Pooh; and such show business luminaries as Bing Crosby, Bob Newhart, George Sanders, Dinah Shore, Jennifer Tilly and James Woods. In addition, a complete directory of animated Disney films enables the reader to cross-reference the actors with their characters.

1.0 out of 5 stars Paperback NOT Hardcover!, November 9, 2011

This review is from: Disney Voice Actors: A Biographical Dictionary (Paperback)
After debating the purchase of this book for a while, primarily due to the price, I decided to hit the ORDER button when the price dipped a bit below the normal listed price.

The book arrived today and I was sorely disappointed to find that, contrary to how Amazon lists it (since publication and up through today, 11/9/11) the book is a paperback NOT a hardback. I spent upwards of $70 on this title with the understanding that, oftentimes, "academic" type books are fairly high priced, particularly for hardback editions. $75 for a paperback- less than 300 pages, however, puts this title firmly in the category of unreasonably priced. The book is nothing more than a compendium of credits for actors who have provided voices for Disney films. Most of this information is readily available online, primarily on IMDB. There is a two page introduction and the rest is lists - there is little to no editorial content in the book.

While a nice resource to have handy, the book is absolutely not worth the price.

UPDATE: While finishing this up, I just went and checked around online. Not only does Amazon list this as a hardcover when it is a paperback, they list it with an original retail price of $125.00 and an Amazon discounted price of "only" $75.00 - a $50 savings! However, the book sells for $75 directly from the publisher. The retail price is $75.00, not $125.00.

UPDATE 2: following my complaint to Amazon (and return of the book), Amazon did update the listing, so it now is no longer listed as a hardcover.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Resource for Walt Disney Fans, November 29, 2011

Having read "The Disney Song Encyclopedia, which I keep close to my DVD player, I looked forward to reading Tom Hischak's latest exploration of the wonderful world of Disney. I was delighted. "Disney Voice Actors" is a meticulously researched reference that entertains as thoroughly as it informs. It's amazing how much detailed information is provided without seeming pedantic or list-heavy. The performers discussed, mainstays of old time radio, motion pictures and the Broadway stage, deserve recognition. Mr. Hischak brings them all to life with his lively and affectionate prose.
