5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
Customer Video Review     Length:: 0:35 Mins
This book is wonderful. I won't say the same or anything about the movie here though.

It's 256 pages thick and loaded with beautiful pictures throughout, from set photographs, film stills, sculptures and art. Every picture is in high resolution and printed satisfying big, showing off the intricate lavish details on the set, costumes,...

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible book for a middling movie
I expected more artwork in this lame book, which is little more than stills from the film. I'd hoped the book would be better than the movie, which was boring, unimaginative, and juvenile in all the worst ways. Sadly, the book is more of the same. The very little pre-production art in the book is as unimaginative as the final film, and a mess of soul-less, anonymous,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, March 30, 2010
This review is from: Disney's Alice in Wonderland: A Visual Companion (Hardcover)
Length:: 0:35 Mins

This book is wonderful. I won't say the same or anything about the movie here though.

It's 256 pages thick and loaded with beautiful pictures throughout, from set photographs, film stills, sculptures and art. Every picture is in high resolution and printed satisfying big, showing off the intricate lavish details on the set, costumes, makeup, portraits and creature designs. There are just so many things to see and take in.

The writeup is mainly on the characters, Alice, Red Queen, White Queen, Mad Hatter and the various characters that appear. There's also an in-depth look at how this movie was produced using the green screen technology. It's all interesting to read.

I'm really impressed at all the character designs, specifically at how Helena Bonham Carter was transformed into the Red Queen. There are step by step photos showing how the makeup artists stitch the red head on. It's so flawless it's like magic except it's not because the whole process took 3 hours. There's also a picture at the back which is really fun. It shows the Tim Burton and the Red Queen chilling out on the set, playing with huge plastic toy guns.

Although there aren't any art book for this movie, it's difficult to see how each of the pictures in this book isn't art. There are a few stunning pieces of concept art included though. The White Queen's castle illustration by Steven Messing is my favourite. It's just magical. The other talented artists who contributed are Dylan Cole, Michael Kutsche, Dermot Power, Bobby Chiu and even Tim Burton himself.

This is a book even the Red Queen will be pleased with.

Highly recommended.

By the way, there's another book on the movie as well, called Alice in Wonderland the Visual Guide (Disney Alice in Wonderland) which I didn't buy. It's 72 pages and published by the DK Children. Don't get the wrong book unless you're getting both.

5.0 out of 5 stars AWSOME!, March 31, 2010

This book is great! As an artist I am really iontersted in the process of making this creative and beautiful movie...it is not a visual companion in a sense of a "picture book" that has narrative from the movie..it is a visual companion that goes with having seen the film to help the read er understand how they created it! If you love the movie, tim burton and are creative you will love this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning!, May 25, 2010

This review is from: Disney's Alice in Wonderland: A Visual Companion (Hardcover)
This book's an incredible labour of love, all film companion's should be as sumptuous, from concept artwork to high resolution film stills, filling 256 glorious pages, it's everything you could wish for and more.
Well worth the money, even the paper it's printed on is fine quality, just the kind of book that makes me even more vehemently against kindle's and other such devices, I hope to god we never come to reducing beautiful books like this, to puny little screens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great pictures, and even interesting text!, February 15, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I'll be honest, I bought this book for the pictures because I was feeling really inspired by this film. Tim burton always intrigues me, and his costume designer Colleen Atwood made amazing costumes. I love this story, and so the three things combined were so awesome. I then went back and read the whole thing, and it was very interesting to see how the process of making a movie like this went. From choosing the right actors, to character design, to adding in CG, it explains everything. Such a great collector's item for anyone who loves this story, Tim Burton, Colleen Atwood, or CG.

5.0 out of 5 stars Capturing the Visual Wonder of the Movie, May 10, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Disney's Alice in Wonderland: A Visual Companion (Hardcover)
I love this book!! I absolutely adored the movie and wanted a true visual companion to study the images further. I loved the interviews with the actors...Tim Burton's introduction...commentary by LInda Woolverton who wrote the screenplay.

Loved reading about the creative direction and challenges of the movie...looking at the inspiring illustrations that preceded the final product...it's a heck of a great book and worth every penny. I find that I don't agree at all with the person who thought there wasn't enough information about the making of the movie. The entire movie was shot in the green room....and there is an entire section of the book devoted to that.

This is an absolute treasure...right down to the full copy of the oraculum that is printed on the reverse side of the dust jacket...fabulous!!

As an artist and Tim Burton fan, I purchased this book with pure excitement. I have many other art companion books relating to Tim Burton movies, and I must say, this is one of my favorites. I love the behind-the-scenes look that the audience gets into the making of this amazing film. I also love seeing Burton's artwork that inspired his creations for this visually stunning film. I highly recommend this book to any Burton fan, artist, or film buff!

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but missing a few things., June 18, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Disney's Alice in Wonderland: A Visual Companion (Hardcover)
The book is put together really well. But as for pictures...there is a lot more film stills, than production drawings or detail oriented stuff. I would have loved more of that. But I still really like the book.....

5.0 out of 5 stars Alice in Wonderland Visual Companion, May 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Disney's Alice in Wonderland: A Visual Companion (Hardcover)
This book is a wonderful addition to anyone's library of film books.

In addition to containing a great many illustrations and designs from the creation of the movie by Tim Burton it also describes in some detail the technical aspects of the motion capture and animation processes used to create the final movie. Informatin is provided by a number of the creators and actors.

Whilst the first half the the text in the book reads more as promotional material the 2nd half of the book's text is far more factual and technical.
