Amazon.com Review

First the good: It's fun to fly around as Peter Pan, collecting feathers and stuff, tangling with various baddies, and exploring colorful 2-D environments. The physics, while rudimentary, give you a vivid sense of Peter Pan's weight, and the controls make moving him around a very intuitive affair. The missions are pretty simple--just right for younger gamers. But elements from the Disney movie on which the game is supposedly based are completely absent. So instead of the film's story, which mixes scenes from both Neverland and WWII-era London, the game offers a completely generic plot about a secret map and hidden treasure. In fact, it verges on false advertising for this game to even bear the name of the film. Return to Neverland also suffers from interminable load times. If your character perishes, you have to wait while the same level loads again.

However, taken not as an adaptation of a film, but as a good, basic adventure for younger gamers, the game is just fine. The environments are fun to explore, and the action is just challenging enough to keep things interesting without making them frustrating. --David Stoesz

Pros:

  • Simple, fun, and colorful
  • Streamlined controls
  • Excellent cutscenes
Cons:
  • Elements from the movie are absent
  • You have to kill birds for no apparent reason
  • Load times give new meaning to the name Neverland

Amazon.com Product Description

Based on Disney's new animated feature film, this game lets you play as either Peter Pan or Tinker Bell and explore over 20 levels filled with leaps, puzzles, races, and fights. Bonus and hidden stages let you discover every nook and cranny of Never Land. Play in a mode designed for the very young or in the challenge mode for more advanced players.

In the world of the game, Wendy has grown up and now has children of her own. But the real world is a very different place from Never Land: World War II is raging, and London has become a battleground. The one comfort Wendy has for her children is her wealth of stories about the remarkable place she used to know. Her boy, Danny, loves bedtime stories, but 12-year-old Jane is a practical child with no patience for this nonsense. In this world torn apart by war, Jane sees no room for faith, trust, and make-believe. At least, not until she is kidnapped by Captain Hook and whisked away to Never Land. Now, the land of fantasy becomes a reality, and the silly boy who would never grow up is her hero, taking Jane on a fabulous adventure of whimsy and daring that just may restore her faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wanting to return to Neverland?, March 23, 2002

Love Peter Pan? I sure do! I loved Return to Neverland, and I wanted to buy the video game, so I rented it at Blockbuster....it was F-U-N! If you've never seen Peter Pan 2, then it'll be exciting to see some video clips as an extra bonus in the game! In the game, you play both Peter and Tink. Only in a few levels, is when you play Tink. And I'll tell you one thing.....the game loads an awful lot! That's my only complain. Other than that, the game is a definate get!

1.0 out of 5 stars Slow, tedious, confusing game, August 9, 2003

I can't begin to describe how slow each level loads, how easily you get killed, and then you have to wait out that load period again to get back in the game. And when I stopped for the day, I couldn't find where I had left off when I came back, since the levels are circular, with levels within the levels, and the game doesn't remember for you, at least not that I was ever able to tell. It was just awful. Even with a Gameshark, it was excruciating. I never finished it.

All right, this is a good game for some time, but if you die, you have to wait a long time for the same level to load again. Oh yeah... WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH THE MOVIE??? Yeah, its fun until you get through the first levels, but you may find yourself staring at the waal, wondering why you bothered. Buy it if you are a die-hard fan though.
