Disposable=Perfection,

Quite simply, this is a book that MUST be seen. The artwork, photographs and story are just perfect. Greatin authoring by Sean Cliver who gives a terribly detailed, painful, humorous and honest look at the behind-the-scenes of the skateboard industry. As a kid growing up and skating in the 80's (I started skating in 1984 when I was 9, this book took me down memory lane and, I must say, enjoyed every step. This book is a no-lose buy and I strongly encourage you purchase.

Cliver has lived it and refined his tome in the latest edition. As a skaterat growing up in the suburbs of Denver, skate art was a portal to another world. Hearing the backstories behind some of the most popular, most influential, most gratuitous, etc. deck graphics was utterly captivating.

Behind the glory,

This review is from: Disposable: A History of Skateboard Art (Paperback)
The book could've been a bunch of pictures of skate decks slapped together, but this book presents the images with a behind-the-scenes feel to it. I love how Sean presents the book with an autobiographic feel which leaves you feeling like you're right there with him, working on some of these graphix. But then, Sean takes it to the next level. He presents a first hand account from the riders who rode the deck(s) or from the artist who created the artwork, which gives the reader a better understanding of what was happening behind the scenes. Now I look at some of these skate decks in a whole new level. It's like a book version of ESPN's Behind the Glory.
Sean, if you're reading this, maybe you should look into that!

Great compilation and glad to have it. However, was hoping to place this in a high school Art room but there is way too much profanity in it. It will remain at home on a shelf.

Sean Cliver delivers the dirt on all your favorite graphics from Jim Phillps to VCJ and beyond. An entertaining read with tons of nice images of graphics from the 70s, 80s and especially the 90s.

I bought this the other day, and I've gotta plug it. I haven't been this stoked with a book in a long time.
The artwork is incredible, that almost goes without saying, and so varied in style that you can't really go wrong - there's something in there for everyone. Almost as impressive though is how well researched and documented everything is. It really is a comprehensive piece of work, and the stories from the riders and artists give a really cool sense of what was going on at the time. Trust me, go get this book. It's killer.

Enjoyed this book a lot. Great photos and stories from the folks who were there - focusing on mid to late eighties boards and companies. Interesting read about the industry at that time, when, for folks far removed in the midwest or other areas of the US that weren't Southern California or Florida, these boards simply seemed to appear by magic. Now, we see what was happening behind the scenes at that time.

Great book! My wife surprised me with this for Christmas last year, she was out of town on business and found a skateboard shop and asked them for advice, they sold her this. There are photos of old decks that go way back, it really brought back some memories. Best coffee table book ever.
