Review

Charts the history of the pattern from the natural world through modern warfare to its role in contemporary culture. (Mallery Roberts Lane New York Times 2004-11-25)

Delves into the use of camouflage as a source of pure graphic pleasure. (Rob Walker New York Times Magazine 2004-10-17)

Thick with information and glossy photographs of camouflage in all its forms -- from color-changing chameleons to vivid graffiti art. (John Jurgensen Hartford Courant 2005-03-11)

From computer games to cargo pants, a compendium of the perennially fashionable print. (Globe and Mail 2004-12-24)

Out of the ordinary... remarkable detail... I really was fully and greatly amazed by the book's complexity... The main value of this extraordinary publication is the freshness with which it informs us about the predilections of human visions -- and the ease with which we are beguiled. (Roy R. Behrens Ballast Quarterly Review)

This unique, handsomely designed coffee-table book has an eye-pleasing layout and text accompanied by lavish and extensive color illustration, and an illustrate bibliography of further resources. (M. Fusich Choice)

Format: Hardcover
This book is not easy to talk about briefly because its contents are so vast. Not only is its page size large, it is also unusually thick, with more than 600 large pages of full-color images and text. It may at first sound pricey, but when you see and hold the physical thing, it's hard to believe that it isn't a lot more expensive. It is, as announced by the subtitle, an encyclopedia of camouflage. But it's far, far more than only that. Only one dimension of it is military, since there are countless examples of pattern disruption in art, nature and culture. This single volume version is a must for anyone who is interested in natural form, the visual arts, deception, mimicry, and pattern play. It will keep you occupied for months. The only thing better that I know of is the two-volume boxed UK edition of the same book in which the second volume is exclusively devoted to camouflage patterns on military uniforms. It is more expensive of course, but it's well worth it, especially for collectors of extraordinary books. For more on that edition, see [...] or search the UK Amazon website.

This was a rare find. It came in perfect condition. It made a great Xmas gift to my son who is a talented artist and loves to wear camo pants. I enjoyed looking at the book too before wrapping it under the tree. I would recommend this book to anyone.

This is an art book that is ambitious, insightful, exhaustive and entertaining. Blechman is a longtime collector and close observer of camouflage in all its forms. He explores early artistic efforts from WW1 & 2 to conceal people and vehicles, then riffs into patterns in nature, street fashion, and culture. Fascinating, a fun read and very informative. A labor of love and worth the effort to read. Loved it
