Books in the Chronicles of the Uprising:

The great cataclysm wiped almost all life from the face of planet Earth, but tiny pockets of survivors crawled from the ashes, with only one thought: survival, at any cost.
But not all survivors were human.
In the dark, militant society that has risen in the aftermath, vampires, once thought to be mythical, have been assimilated and enslaved. Used for blood sport their lives are allowed to continue only for the entertainment of the masses. Reviled as savages, they are destined to serve out their immortal lives in the arena, as gladiators.
And there is no greater gladiator than Mira: undefeated, uncompromising...and seemingly unbreakable. When an escape attempt leads Mira into the path of Lucian Stavros, the city's Regent, her destiny is changed forever.
Lucian, raised in a culture which both reviles and celebrates the savagery and inhumanity of vampires, finds Mira as intriguing as she is brash. An impulsive decision - to become Mira's patron - changes more than just Lucian's perception about vampire kind. The course of his life is altered in ways he could never have predicted - a life that is suddenly as expendable as hers.
Can Mira prove to Lucian that all is not as it seems? Can Lucian escape centuries of lies, bloodshed, and propaganda to see the truth? Or will the supreme power of the human overlords destroy them both?

Narrowly escaping death at the hands of the Magistrate, Mira travels west, toward the coast. With three weakened human fugitives accompanying her, she searches for the mythical land of Sanctuary.
After encountering a pack of wolf shifters, headed by the charismatic--and brazen--Stryker, Mira learns that Sanctuary is real after all. Caldera Grove: home of the Otherkin. Hidden in the mouth of a dormant volcano, it has protected its residents from humans since the early days following the great cataclysm. For Mira-- a vampire-- Caldera Grove is a land of peace; an escape from the relentless persecution of the humans who once enslaved her, and an end to the daily struggle and bloodshed of being a gladiator.
For the humans accompanying her, Caldera Grove means death. Humans, greedy and untrustworthy creatures, are destroyed before they can penetrate its borders.
To plead her case for entry into Caldera, Mira must abandon her companions, albeit temporarily, and follow Stryker into the heart of the city. What she finds within Caldera Grove presents her with an unenviable decision between her own desires for freedom and peace, or honor and the human companions who risked it all for her.

Peace is an illusion. Blood, violence, and death follow Mira like shadows.
Battle lines have been drawn between human and Otherkin, and a bloody war is on the horizon: one that will end in either a shift in the world's balance of power...or ultimate destruction.
In spite of their strength, powers, and a rage known only by the oppressed, the Otherkin are evenly matched by the superior numbers of the human army. To tip the balance in their favor, the Otherkin need more soldiers - and their only options are the Gladiators of New Haven city.
Mira is sent across enemy lines to recruit any able-bodied vampires to her cause. But what she discovers along the way will blur the lines between friends and enemies. Seeds of doubt weaken Mira's allegiance, and she finds herself torn between the old masters who used her as entertainment and the new ones who consider her as nothing more than a weapon.
As the war draws near, Mira will have to decide what she is truly fighting for.

Peace is just a breath between battles for Mira. Hardened by slavery and war, she longs for the simpler life, knowing that it might never be hers to enjoy. There is always another battle waiting to be fought, another foe on the horizon. Peace between humans, vampires, and otherkin may be nothing more than a dream, but Mira holds out hope.
It is during this brief respite that Mira is gifted one of her greatest weapons. Though it brings with it memories of a time when she was not so jaded, it also comes with a reminder of terrible pain and loss. Awakening deeply hidden emotions within her, if Mira can use this to her advantage, she'll have a new ally in the next battle to come.

Who knew the end of the world would bring such change?!? The end of civilization as we know it, this is a dystopian vampire battling treat! When the humans utilize the vampires "kryptonite" to threaten their very existence everything changes. The "top dog" is no longer earned by strength but who has the tools to bring you to your knees. Sometimes you just have to play along as survival is not guaranteed, even if you can beat the others, thanks to the Elite calling all of the shots. This is a whole new world where weaknesses will end you, playing fair could kill you, & trusting anyone is simply not an option. But...then there is always someone who will surprise you. ;*}
If you enjoy stories involving gladiator type battles, rulers enforcing their own agenda, vampires who are true savages, & one warrior determined to break free then you must read this book!

When the world as we know it ends, the real monsters of this world are revealed and it's sure not the vampires.

This book is a page-turner filled with action, mystery, and violence, as we follow Mira on her quest for survival. With each page brings renewed hope, new horrors and non-stop twists and turns that explodes with an ending you never saw coming. Katie Salidas, you have earned yourself a new fan.

Dissension is in one word...Un-put-downable! I read this book in one sitting and have started the second book of the series.

Mira is a vampire imprisoned and used as a warrior by the humans. Each week she must fight and kill her own kind to feed the blood-thirty humans need for violence as she performs in the gladiator ring. Funny, weren't her kind the supposed blood thirsty ones? She performs and is the undefeated champion, meaning she has killed countless of her fellow vampires. Her only other alternative is death and death is not an option. Mira is a survivor. A survivor hoping to flee the prison and be free. She knows first hand the real monsters are not the vampires, but the humans. Savages that torture her kind, and makes her kill her own kind for sport. She continues to fight hoping that one day she could escape and be free once again. She never thought a human just might be her saving grace.

Lucien is an Elite taught that vampires are killing machines that threaten humanity. When he spots a vampire showing mercy to a human, when that human only wanted her death, he realizes that the humans were terribly wrong. He decides to become her patron to learn more about her and her kind. What he didn't realize was how much she was going to turn his world upside down.

Dissension is my introduction to Katie Salidas writings. I've long grown tired of vampire books and not much for the fantastical. So for me to give this vampire book five stars tells you it's not your typical vampire novel. In the future after the apocalypse vampires and humans coexisted. Then humans for a change gained the upper hand and being the hunters enslaved vampires. As a throwback to ancient Roman times, much of the enslavement dealt with forcing vampires to become gladiators fighting each other to the death. Mira is a reluctant but superior fighter and apparently one of the few female gladiators. My one critique as she fights only male gladiators. And the slaves also appease their human patrons other ways. Mira leads a life of pain, degradation and torture. Death seems welcome to her but her rebellious nature and dreams of freedom keep her undead spirit alive. Ironic, right? Full of action, yet surprisingly not a gore fest and refreshingly without much vulgarity this is a fast paced, enjoyable read. Thank you, Katie Salidas for breathing fresh air into the vampire genre.

I was given a copy in exchange for an honest review and I really loved the world she created for us. In this world Vampires aren't really feared like you would think, the vampires fear the Humans. They are enslaved and forced to fight each other Gladiator style, they were used by their owners for lots of money. If they loose a battle and are not dead the owner will find the cruelest way to punish them.

For many generations the Human Elite have taught the lower level humans that vampires were evil, and vile barbaric creatures. They aren't Human so they imprison them and condemn them to death.

Mira the main character ,is a vampire and the only undefeated fighter,Mira was the strong independent type and I really liked that she wasn't a weak sniffling heroine, she is tough and knows how to protect herself. She gets cocky and has a smart mouth that often times gets her in trouble. However, she isn't your typical blood thirsty Vampire, she isn't about killing for sport, she hates it, but she does what she needs to do for survival. After one of her battles she tries to escape and during this attempt she has a run in with Lucian who is the Regent. He escorts her back to her cell and promises to talk to her soon. She has a hard time trusting him and his motives, but wouldn't you?

Lucian Stavros is the Regent in charge of the Iron Gates and the city were Mira fights. He is the one who decides who will live or die. He takes an interest in Mira when he finds her escaping. He is really hard to read at first but as time goes on you learn things about him and what his role is in the whole grand scheme of things. I'm hoping for a relationship to happen between Lucian and Mira but who knows
Dissension is well worth the time and it will leave you wanting more but not enough to have you say "What the Hell?' I
I for one can't wait to see what happens with Mira and her people.
