2015 RONE award Winner for best Paranormal
"Dissension" weaves a spine-tingling tale about human savagery and the vampire race's desperate struggle to survive." Read full review in the 2014 November issue of InD'tale Magazine.
The great cataclysm wiped almost all life from the face of planet Earth, but tiny pockets of survivors crawled from the ashes, with only one thought: survival, at any cost.
But not all survivors were human.
In the dark, militant society that has risen in the aftermath, vampires, once thought to be mythical, have been assimilated and enslaved. Used for blood sport their lives are allowed to continue only for the entertainment of the masses. Reviled as savages, they are destined to serve out their immortal lives in the arena, as gladiators.
And there is no greater gladiator than Mira: undefeated, uncompromising...and seemingly unbreakable. When an escape attempt leads Mira into the path of Lucian Stavros, the city's Regent, her destiny is changed forever.
Lucian, raised in a culture which both reviles and celebrates the savagery and inhumanity of vampires, finds Mira as intriguing as she is brash. An impulsive decision - to become Mira's patron - changes more than just Lucian's perception about vampire kind. The course of his life is altered in ways he could never have predicted - a life that is suddenly as expendable as hers.
Can Mira prove to Lucian that all is not as it seems? Can Lucian escape centuries of lies, bloodshed, and propaganda to see the truth? Or will the supreme power of the human overlords destroy them both?
Narrowly escaping death at the hands of the Magistrate, Mira travels west, toward the coast. With three weakened human fugitives accompanying her, she searches for the mythical land of Sanctuary.
After encountering a pack of wolf shifters, headed by the charismatic--and brazen--Stryker, Mira learns that Sanctuary is real after all. Caldera Grove: home of the Otherkin. Hidden in the mouth of a dormant volcano, it has protected its residents from humans since the early days following the great cataclysm. For Mira-- a vampire-- Caldera Grove is a land of peace; an escape from the relentless persecution of the humans who once enslaved her, and an end to the daily struggle and bloodshed of being a gladiator.
For the humans accompanying her, Caldera Grove means death. Humans, greedy and untrustworthy creatures, are destroyed before they can penetrate its borders.
To plead her case for entry into Caldera, Mira must abandon her companions, albeit temporarily, and follow Stryker into the heart of the city. What she finds within Caldera Grove presents her with an unenviable decision between her own desires for freedom and peace, or honor and the human companions who risked it all for her.
Peace is an illusion. Blood, violence, and death follow Mira like shadows.
Battle lines have been drawn between human and Otherkin, and a bloody war is on the horizon: one that will end in either a shift in the world's balance of power...or ultimate destruction.
In spite of their strength, powers, and a rage known only by the oppressed, the Otherkin are evenly matched by the superior numbers of the human army. To tip the balance in their favor, the Otherkin need more soldiers - and their only options are the Gladiators of New Haven city.
Mira is sent across enemy lines to recruit any able-bodied vampires to her cause. But what she discovers along the way will blur the lines between friends and enemies. Seeds of doubt weaken Mira's allegiance, and she finds herself torn between the old masters who used her as entertainment and the new ones who consider her as nothing more than a weapon.
As the war draws near, Mira will have to decide what she is truly fighting for.
Peace is just a breath between battles for Mira. Hardened by slavery and war, she longs for the simpler life, knowing that it might never be hers to enjoy. There is always another battle waiting to be fought, another foe on the horizon. Peace between humans, vampires, and otherkin may be nothing more than a dream, but Mira holds out hope.
It is during this brief respite that Mira is gifted one of her greatest weapons. Though it brings with it memories of a time when she was not so jaded, it also comes with a reminder of terrible pain and loss. Awakening deeply hidden emotions within her, if Mira can use this to her advantage, she'll have a new ally in the next battle to come.
Immortality is never guaranteed...
As much as Mira dreams of a simpler existence, blood and violence are her way of life. Former gladiator turned freedom fighter, she has carved a trail from New Haven to Caldera Grove and back, freeing her people, the vampires, from enslavement by the humans.
But with victory almost within reach, a new and powerful enemy emerges. One who'll be satisfied with nothing less than complete subjugation--or destruction--of all supernatural beings.
With a secret army of his own, he's more than prepared for any resistance Mira and her patchy rebel forces can offer, and demands their immediate surrender.
Never one to back away from a fight, Mira believes she's ready for anything. But with the battle lines drawn she will be forced to make the ultimate sacrifice.
Kill or be killed.
Coming Soon...
The final book.

Dystopian movies, TV shows, and books are my new favorite "thing"

I guess that makes me pretty basic since that's what's in right now anyway, but there's something about it. The real world, but worse, even as they are trying to make it better. Advancements can't save us. It's always interesting to see how different authors play out the whole "what if" scenarios.

Add some vampires into the mix, and I'm sold, because I wasn't over the first trend before the new one came in (wink).

The world building in this was EPIC and the plot kept me on the edge of my seat from page one. Salidas really proved herself as a writer with this series. This novel was gritty, dark, and exciting, and I highly recommend it!

Who knew the end of the world would bring such change?!? The end of civilization as we know it, this is a dystopian vampire battling treat! When the humans utilize the vampires "kryptonite" to threaten their very existence everything changes. The "top dog" is no longer earned by strength but who has the tools to bring you to your knees. Sometimes you just have to play along as survival is not guaranteed, even if you can beat the others, thanks to the Elite calling all of the shots. This is a whole new world where weaknesses will end you, playing fair could kill you, & trusting anyone is simply not an option. But...then there is always someone who will surprise you. ;*}
If you enjoy stories involving gladiator type battles, rulers enforcing their own agenda, vampires who are true savages, & one warrior determined to break free then you must read this book!

I did receive this book free for an honest review. And I am truly impressed with the world K.A. Salidas has created. A world where Humans don't actually kill the vampire, but enslaves them.

Mira, is a vampire who has been enslaved and used by her Owner as a gladiator. Because Mira is a very effective gladiator having never been defeated, her rebellious attitude is admirable. She is a strong dominant, intelligent female. My kind of story. Her life is slightly lower than the filth she is forced to live with. Who does she defeat in the arena to the delight of the cheering humans? Other Vampire gladiators of course. Humans love that vampires are forced to kill other vampires, instead of them.

The human elite have for many, many years educated their masses on how vile and dangerous vampires are. They simply are barbaric savages not worth saving but for these games. Lucien Stavros is the Regent of the Iron Gate where Mira fights. It is his task to either save or condemn the defeated vampire. Usually that meant one more dead vampire.

Mira's rebellious attitude forces her to continually try to escape form her living hell and search for freedom. During one such escape attempt, she meets Lucien face to face. And she is not what he was taught she was. He was not what she anticipated. The story gets even more interesting from here. But I do not disclose.

This is an incredibly original world that I want to continue reading about. This book ended to soon in my opinion and now I hunger for the next one in The Chronicles of the Uprising.

Title: Dissension
Series: Book #1 in the Chronicles of the Uprising Series
Author: K.A. Salidas
Rating: B-
Review: This novel was definitely an interesting take on vampires and the paranormal genre. Basically, it's a dark, dystopian tale about a world in which humans have subjugated vampires, forcing them to life in prisons and engage in life or death battles in a gladiator arena for their own perverted amusements. Mira is tough chick - spending day in and day out fighting against her circumstances and those of her people. Lucien, on the other hand, I felt as if we barely got to know before the ending of the book. Which brings me to my main point of contention with this book - the ending. There's a cliffhanger, and then there is just those dump-you-right-in-the-middle-of-a-scene endings that totally rub me the wrong way - leaving you unfulfilled and just thoroughly ticked off. This one is the latter. Sure, I'm confident the next book picks right up where this one leaves up, but there is nothing I hate more than an unfulfilled ending to a book. And the end of this one was enough to almost ruin the whole book for me. To be honest, I would have rated it higher if not for the ending - so just be forewarned about that before starting it!

Once I started reading Dissension I couldn't stop! I absolutely loved this innovative twist on the dystopian landscape. Vampires and humans in a new dynamic! I have to say that one of my favorite aspects of this book was the inclusion of the gladiators even tho it is set in the future. I know what you are thinking - it sounds like too many things all at once! But it isn't! The characters have wonderful development and the story flows together perfectly. I cannot wait to read book 2, Complication in the Chronicles of the Uprising.

What did you love best about Dissension?
Mira and her never give up Attitude!

What other book might you compare Dissension to and why?
None this book was very different.

What does Meghan Kelly bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
She bring Mira smart comments to life!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes it is a fast paced book that you get hooked on easily!

Any additional comments?
I loved Dissension because it was very different from other vampire books I've listen to or read.
This world was about to come to an end but the vampire's came out of hiding to help the humans save our world. That was 30 years ago. Since than in the story line. The humans were terrified of the vampires and caged them all out of fear. The vampires have to fight to the death to survive. The are only feed a minimum amount of blood but only if they are good and fight as their masters command. They have been turned into slaves. Fight slaves and sex slaves, slaves that never know if they will survive one more day.
Mira is the main prized fighter who hasn't given up on earning her freedom. After 30 years in a cage she starts to fight back for her freedom. She is a real fighter in mind, body and sprite. Her smart mouth will make you laugh. It will also upset you. It is easy to see they need to be freed from having to kill each other for sport. When she was beating or put in the light box. I was unhappy with the masters. I could only think, how dare you.
I could easily listen to this book twice. It has you on an emotionally roller coaster from start to finish. The author just grasps you with the unjust treatment of the vampires.

The narrator Meghan Kelly has a perfect voice for Mira that helps you really get the Main character. The smarty comments the Mira says are more emotional for the listener.

I recieved this audio book for a fair review!
