Book Description

December 1996
Subtitled "A Caddy's Lessons in Life, Business, and Golf," Distance to the Green defies rigid classification. Book stores shelve it on their business/motivation stacks. Golf stores carry it because of its vivid golfing stories and tips. Even non-golfers enjoy its humorous and real characters and the true-to-life instruction it provides.

The book follows Scotty, a hardheaded and egotistical college golfer who is forced to spend the summer caddying at National, the most prestigious golf course in the country. While caddying for some of the most significant and wealthy men and women in the country, he learns important life lessons from its members. He learns how to set and attain goals for both personal and business success. He learns how to "wire the deal" -- a five step process for extracting the greatness within all of us. He learns the real steps of problem solving, how mentoring helps increase intellectual capital, what team building can mean, what is truly significant in communication -- and still more, all of it vital in achieving success as an effective human being and leader.

Woven into these significant life lessons are great golfing stories, humor, hints, tips, and pure, colorful descriptions of the "best golf course in America." You'll enjoy meeting Scotty and who he becomes, his mentors, and you'll like the fact that you can share in his excitement and growth as he learns some valuable lessons . . . and you won't even have to carry the bags.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"A new book by Gary Abram and bob O'Byrne applies the lessons of golf to life and business in a unique and challenging way. Distance to the Green: A Caddy's Lessons in Life, Business and Golf charts a path for goal attainment and provides readers with an everyday list of principles to obtain personal and business success." -- Golf Illustrated; January, 1998

"Wouldn't it be a swell world if playing golf made you better at your job? Distance to the Green: A Caddy's Lessons in Life, Business and Golf . . . follows Scotty, a college golfer with natural ability and an arrogant attitude. Forced by his coach to spend the summer caddying for the rich, he carries the bag of Bob O'Brien, who serves up life lessons and business acumen. A book for those who want to win, in life and on the course." -- USA TODAY, July 11, 1997 in their "Best Bets" column

From the Author

"This is a book mostly for people who like golf and who want to succeed in their lives and business. It's full of simple truths that I try to live, myself, not always entirely successfully. But my mentor (and co-author), Bob O'Byrne, changed my life and what I've tried to do is pass along some of his wisdom. It's kinda a fun book, too -- people tell me it seems authentic, and it really is -- it's a light reading but heavy thinking book. The golf stuff is based on my own experiences on the links -- there are some happy moments there, as well as some disasters. You'll like this book if you want something different, something that's not heavy duty self-help yet you'd like to know more about getting where you want to go. People tell me it has lots of applications in their lives and that they like the fact it's low key, humorous, and has a message that's a whole lot more than just a golf story. Call me up at 800/798-6160 if you'd like to talk about it after you've read it. I mean it -- I'd like to hear what you think . . . and maybe get some more stories for my next book, Rattle the Cup.

I don't know why I thought this book would actually be about golf. It is more about "life lessons" which is great for the younger crowd, I'm sure. As for me, I've had all the life lessons I need for a lifetime so the book didn't work for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars A light and encouraging read, January 21, 1999
This review is from: Distance to the Green: A Caddy's Lessons in Life, Business and Golf (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this light read. What I really like is that it isn't a heavy motivator. There were no forceful attitudes like other motivational books I have read. It simply stated through an intelligent and humourous read that we can all learn values from others and then share our knowledge and values to help people with finding their own paths in life. Well done to the authors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, especially for business people who golf., October 21, 1998

A fun book with an interesting format. Scotty, the caddy, learns much that everyone needs to know. The golf stuff is accurate and the "lessons" are ones we all need to learn. This isn't quite self help, but it helped me in several ways . . . I highly recommend it!
