5.0 out of 5 stars The CD that started it all
From the opening title "Grain of Salt" you should know this isn't the same Poison the Well that is of now, but this does not mean they did not have the intensity, the drive and the amazing technical and complex skills within their songs musically and lyrically. Instead of one vocalist like they have now, they have two on this CD. Without this CD and the opening...

The first five songs are a good representation of the well's growth since this e.p.'s first release. the singer is different, and the new guy is better. maybe not exactly better, just different. i like the new guy more. "Torn" is a really great song.

the last two songs are live versions of two songs from the full length "the opposite of december..." I don't really think they are a fair representation of the well's live power. these songs are with the current vocalist, but they jut lack the drive of actually being there. (i guess that's common with a lot of live recordings.) anyway, get this cd if you really like poison the well and you can't wait till february for the new album, "tear from the red", which is sure to rock socks.

Instead of one vocalist like they have now, they have two on this CD. Without this CD and the opening song, this band wouldn't be who they are today. This CD is a must for all those who are Poison the Well fans or those of whom are just getting into hardcore. Every track on this CD holds a different sound, unique in it's own style. Songs like "Torn" and "Obstacle" depict what this band is truely about and what led them to become the reigning kings of Emocore, which also led among many followers.

3.0 out of 5 stars young...., December 13, 2002

only get this if you have both poison the well albums, because you will think that these guys are a ... garage band. This sounds very different from 'the well' we know now...but the live songs make it worthwhile...pick it up if you find the right price

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding... If you can find it., February 14, 2005
This review is from: Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder (Audio CD)
My friend and I were at FYE one day and stumbled upon a Poison the Well CD that we had been looking for for a while. Distance... We bought it immediately and we haven't stopped playing it since. The songs on here are so amazing, none of them stick out as being the best they are all equally great. The two live tracks from Opposite of December are a great addition to this PTW CD. If you find this album buy it, you won't regret parting with the 10 bucks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poison The Well's Best !, July 16, 2004
This review is from: Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder (Audio CD)
I have heard Poison The Well's new album, and this older one is a million times better than their newer stuff. Needless to say "Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder" is THE BEST Poison The Well album available. I love every single track on it, I wish they would go back to this style, it really, really is a awesome album. There is no real way to describe it. At first, I hated the screaming, and the vocals. However, I listened to it repeatedly to give it a chance, and finally realized that the screaming is wierdly enough, calmed by the instrumentals. It's like they blend perfectly, although the vocals and instrumentals give you a different emotion. Bah, enough of this, just buy it, listen to it, you will NOT regret it........

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Melodic Hardcore out there!, November 7, 2004
This review is from: Distance Makes the Heart Grow Fonder (Audio CD)
First off all the nu metal heads who don't like PTW can eat a CACK. PTW's first release is one of the best album's I own. There are only five songs since it is a re-realeased EP. I had burnt a copy of "The Opposite Of December..." from one of my tru dogs, and I was mesmerized at the intensity and emotion of the music, it truly was amazing. When I bought their first album I didn't expect it to be better than "...December..." but it was damn good. Their original vocalist turns out, that he could barely even speak English during the recording, but sounds really great and the guitar melodies, drums, the bass! all rock out and knock pictures off ya wall. This is probably the best debut ever for a band in this genre. Go buy it, it's really cheap and the quality is fantastic.

THis CD by Poison the Well is awesome!. its only an E.P and it is the album that started it all for PTW. I find that the vocals are much different than "the opposite of december" or "You come before you" even and it may sound more like the vocals displayed on "Tear From the Red". However, i recently downloaded "tear from the red" because people were saying it was their worst album, good choice...this E.P -- "Distance Only Makes the Heart Grow Fonder" is much better with only 5 songs on it (aside from the live newer ones which are from the Opposite.OF.December) My favorite song on here is Grain Of Salt, this ones a classic. here are the songs....

1. Grain Of Salt ............. 10/10..great way to begin the album and a great way to start Poison.The.Well
2. Lost In Silence ........... 7/10.. it's Ok
3. Torn ...................... 9/10.. I like the rifs on this one, really good song, ..feels like i've heard this one before..watever
4. Obstacle .................. 9/10.. Another great song!..as good as Torn!
5. Material Christ ........... 8/10.. This is a pretty good song!.. just a little better than lost in silence but its pretty good!

I Find this album to be very good for a start E.P...this band will, and already is tearing up the hardcore/punk, even emomtion..scenes , especially with their new "you come before you" album.
The only thng i dont get is...why didnt they just make about 4 or 5 more songs and put it on...would have been better than "Tear from the red" at least

If you are used to the vocals of the newer Poison the Well a.k.a "you come before you",..this CD might seem strange to you...completely different vocals...singer seems to be changing his screams over each album....either that or..i've heard that they've had a couple different singers already??..i dunno....anywayz, if you've never heard PTW before i think you should first get 'opposite of december'....otherwise you'll think the this band is a stupid lazy garbage band...you need to first understand wat poison the well is first....."You come before you" is an awesome album..get it as well....or download Grain Of Salt song...its great....

thanx....

2.0 out of 5 stars Boo., August 29, 2005

Ehh, I am not too happy with this recent purchase of mine. I mostly purchased it hoping for something innovative, fresh and inspired, though what I recieved was certainly the opposite. All of the songs seem to drag, with hardly any interesting parts whatsoever. The breakdowns are some of the worst I've heard and the lyrics are a bit too pseudo-angst for my tastes. I'd say the one thing I do like about the album is the screams, for they're executed quite well, though that is the extent of it.

I guess if emo is your thing, and you want some elementary heaviness with some screams, this may very well be for you, though if you're looking for something with some depth, definitely look elsewhere.
