Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Spare and soulful songwriting rules the sophomore album from Brighton, U.K.'s Fink. Nine gravid songs grace this odd release from the usually more electronically inclined Ninja Tune imprint, on which Fink stands out as a decidedly analog, often wholly acoustic, artist. Distance and Time was produced by the great Andy Barlow, formerly of the jungle-pop masters Lamb. Barlow is the Nigel Godrich you've never heard of, an unheralded behind-the-boards genius who here sets aside his own "magic boxes" in favor of a hands-off approach that raises the exposed nerves of Fink's songwriting from campfire intimacy to searing emotional splendor.--Jason Kirk

Product Description
If Biscuits for Breakfast, Fink's debut album for Ninja Tune, signified a partial seismic musical shift for both artist and label, then Distance and Time realigns both sides of the tectonic plate. This glorious follow-up showcases Fink's sharpened knack for thoughtful songwriting that details fragmented moments full of heartache and hopeful promise, steeped in sonic palettes rich with dub, blues, folk, and acoustic soul.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Lost Treasure, December 9, 2007
By Ausar777 (Oakland, CA) - See all my reviews
If you don't know who Fink is, you're losing when it comes to the music scene. His first album, "Biscuits For Breakfast", had a huge impact on me. It's pretty minimal in terms of musical arrangement, but it gets by on lyrics, head-nodding music, and his voice. This guy has one of those voices that you talked about like Chris Martin when you first heard Coldplay. (They don't have similar voices, stupid.)
Anyway, this album is different from "Biscuits..." due to the club music hints. (He used to create and produce club music.) It's a bit more forward, but make no mistake, this is still a laid-back album.
The opener, "Trouble..." is a perfect start. And it keeps the mood -- after a few build ups -- until the final joint. My favorite songs are "This is the Thing", "Blueberry Pancakes", "Under the Same Stars" (hot damn!!!), and "So Many Roads". "Under..." is that song you always wanted to play when you were thinking about someone you really dig, but you're not able to catch up with each other for whatever reason.
Anyway, it's a really, really good album -- not great like "Biscuits..." But it medicates my Fink fix.
Buy it thru the Marketplace for $19. The import price is a total rip-off. I hope he makes it back the States for a San Francisco show. Peace!

5.0 out of 5 stars Further departure, November 26, 2008
By Justin M. Andrews (Baltimore, MD USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Just wanted to add a note to the reviewer before me that Biscuits For Breakfast was NOT Fink's first release...Fresh Produce was his first. The aforementioned second release, Biscuits For Breakfast, and this most recent, Distance And Time, are polar shifts from the first. Continuing where he left off with Biscuits, this album is wholly a stronger effort with stronger lyrics and in my opinion, slightly cleaner production.

For any new listeners who are not familiar, Fink falls somewhere between the voice and lyrics of Mike Doughty (Soul Coughing) minus the experimentation (which was left on the experimental though simultaneously safe Fresh Produce), crossed with Jose Gonzalez after having received a shot of backbone.

Definitely worth checking out. Great album.

Trouble's What You're In, This Is The Thing, & So Many Roads are the three stand-outs on this very solid album. Make It Good, a song which made a reworked appearance on Bonobo's most recent release Days To Come, may suffer if you've heard the latter first.
