Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

The best flamenco guitarists tend to hail from Spain. But this Texas virtuoso is an amazing exception. Not since Al Di Meola has an American so completely mastered this ancient Andalusian art. On his debut disc, the fleet-fingered, McGuire is backed by percussionists and vocalists who perform the infectious palmas handclaps, along with Santana bassist Barry Rietveld, and vocalist Jose Manuel Blanco "El Grillo." The CD delivers a dancing and delightful program that showcases all of the inventions and dimensions of the genre. "Lagrimas de Sol" ("Tears of the Sun)" is laced with hypnotizing colombianas. "Rachel Camela" swings in the maze-like alegrias, and the title track features violin accompaniment interlocking with zesty tangos rhythms. The most interesting selection, "Aires de Mozambique," bounces with a slight Afro-Cuban edge. McGuire plays with a precision and passion that moves the music from the heat of the Spanish sun into the deepest heart of Texas. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

5.0 out of 5 stars real flamenco done right, June 28, 2005

Al Dimeola? Uh no, this guy is a real flamenco guitarist who's cd shows his understanding and mastery of flamenco as it's done in Spain today. More than that, it shows a great musician who has original ideas within the tradition. Just a great player and a great cd. If you like flamenco guitar, buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars EVOLUTION OF TRADITION, February 2, 2003
By
Chris K "thesandu" (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Distancias (Audio CD)
If one pays careful attention to any of the great artists, one will find simultaneously a loyal devotion to the traditional foundation of their art-form, combined with a fierce desire to build on that foundation with new and innovative inspirations that reflect both the artist's prevailing cultural environment and stimulus, plus the artist's own unique creative genius, without compromising the original integrity of the previous masters' intent and discoveries. This is very difficult to do. There are so many gifted artists who unfortunately lose sight of this and allow their arrogance or insecurities to interfere with their work.

As first done by Paco de Lucia, and recently by Vicente Amigo among others, now Jason McGuire is one of those rare individuals who contribute to the evolution of great tradition. And from Texas of all places, to further prove the Universality of Great Music. This debut album is indispensible to all who appreciate the mystery and emotion of Flamenco Music. From the lilting lullaby in Rachel Camela (Alegrias), to the astonishing Solea, Suenos de Fragua, we witness the great passion of Flamenco introduced again in fresh new forms. Buy this, listen often and have fun, and let's hope for more soon from this exciting, new interpreter!
