About the Author

Al Past is an author, musician, photographer, retired professor of English, husband, father, and grandfather. He lives on a ranch in south Texas.

More About the Author

Al Past has been an author, a husband, father, grandfather, a musician, a Naval officer, a rancher, a house builder, and a professor of English and linguistics. His first book, still in print after 25 years, is a collection of his arrangements of baroque masterpieces for two treble clef instruments (Charles Colin Publications). He has also collaborated with author Barry Yelton, providing the photographs to accompany Mr. Yelton's lambent poetry in On Wings of Gentle Power (Strider Nolan Media).

The first volume of the Distant Cousin series, the highly original tale of Ana Darcy that had been haunting him for twenty years, had to wait to be written down until after his retirement from teaching. Readers have followed the adventures of Ana's family in the four companion volumes to date: Distant Cousin: Repatriation, Distant Cousin: Reincarnation, Distant Cousin: Regeneration, and Distant Cousin: Recirculation.

Dr. Past lives on a ranch in south Texas with his wife (a journalist and retired professor of Spanish) and way more animals than is good for him.

The goals that are hers, manifested in so much of what she does, are quietly shouted by her every action.

Fans of Ana Darcy & her wonderful Mendez family won't be disappointed with this latest sequel! DC#4 skips a few years since we last saw Ana, Matt & the kids hidden in New Mexico, enjoying a wonderful happy & full life. We're treated to some great chapters on how that life has developed, how the gifted children are growing, and how Ana has settled into her role on Earth, as well as developing the stories of those around Ana - Julio & Clio, Clio's new friend Harry, our old friends Rob and Michelle. And while it's natural to want our heroine to be the center of every plot, their lives are interesting enough to care about these side characters & to want to know more.

But we know from the outset that Ana's peaceful life won't be left alone for long... that an enemy from the past is seeking bitter revenge & that Ana's life might not ever be the same. How can she keep herself, her family & her own life safe? Ana might not be able to rely on her skills alone & she has to face some of the harsh realities of the world - the violence, the tragedies & worst for all parents: the fear of not always being able to protect your children.

This great story not only provides some of Ana's action-packed fighting skills, but the sensitive issues of battling insecurities, past & present horrors & even homesickness, that remind us the Ana is not an all-knowing all-fighting alien, but a human being; trillions of miles from home, here on an impulse to save the world & subject to all the same fears & weaknesses as the rest of us. And even with Matt by her side, can she handle them?

I just finished this forth book in the Distant Cousin Series and found it to be an
excellent read. I have followed Ana through her 3 previous novels and watched her adapt
to her new environment. I have watched her grow and develop her "human" tendencies. I
found this novel to be especially interesting because of the character development.
Ana has proved herself to be a very extraordinary woman, but in this novel we see that
Ana is not without the feelings and problems of us mortals. This novel brings us closer
to Ana's family and friends and the Mendez family. Toward the end of this novel I found
myself thinking I was reading about my good friends and not some characters in a Fiction
Novel. I'm hoping there is a 5th in the series, I'd like to know that my friends are
OK. This is a fun and exciting series to read.

Regeneration includes the customary suspense, a few great action sequences, inside looks into the daily life of the Mendez family, which I love, and some heartbreaking new insights into Ana's past. As Ana and Matt deal with an assassination attempt, a devastating tragedy, the illness of a beloved family member, and a parent's worst nightmare, the blows never stop, becoming too much for even Ana Darcy to handle. Worried about his wife's mental state, Matt takes charge and with the help of Hleo and other family and close friends, devises a special ceremony to help heal Ana's soul and show their love and suppport. I laughed, I cried, and my heart ached for Ana and her family. The latest installment in the Distant Cousin series does not disappoint, it just keeps getting better and better!

At least it seems to be the end. It rounds things up nicely, even tying up the one loose end I was wondering about in the last pages. And, despite an unexpected family tragedy, everyone grows up in this one, not least our ET for adults, Anna Darcy-Mendez. At home in New Mexico, the kids are becoming teenagers, though maybe more in the mold an adult writer might want them than the ordinary variety. But their mother is hardly ordinary, so why should her progeny be? Their unusual talents and interests do make the whole family compelling, and the enjoyable story sends them all off to a presumably secure future.

This is definitely the best Ana Darcy book yet! I really liked the fact that I got deeper insight into some of the characters I loved from previous books (especially Rob and Michelle) and I love the twins and their story line. I think it was very interesting the challenges Ana goes through...and it was fascinating how the issues were resolved. I cannot wait for the next book!! I am excited to see what is happening with the twins, and I hope it tells a bit more of what happens with Harry and his situation!

Another literary success for Al Past! What imagination, creativity, and articulate story-telling! The story grabs you once again on the first page, and I had to pace myself because I didn't want the story to end. Which it did, before I was ready. The characters are so real and the plot so enticing - I just love the new characters like Raisin and the twins of course are phenomenal. Ana Darcy rules!!

Beast book in the series since the first one! There are some really powerful, memorable scenes here, and a gripping story. Once you start reading this, it pulls you all the way to the end. And with this ending, I am going straight into the next book.
