5.0 out of 5 stars 5 star time travel - excellent story
I picked up this romance figuring it would be a quick read - it turned out to be an excellent one. This book grabbed my interest right away. The way this story was crafted, it was easy to imagine that a ring could wisk you off into the past. Once able to suspend belief, I was able to enjoy the very well created characters and well written story. You can picture the estate...

3.0 out of 5 stars I would like to give this 3 1/2 stars or a 7 out of 10
Distant Dreams is an enjoyable time travel read, and worth picking up. This story is better written than the last book by Ms. Lykins which I read (Echoes of Tommorow), but still not up to the standards I think she is capable of writing at. Shaelyn and Alex create a warm plot with humor woven throughout the story. I do not have any problem with the fact that our hero...

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 star time travel - excellent story, April 9, 2005
This review is from: Distant Dreams (Time Passages) (Paperback)
I picked up this romance figuring it would be a quick read - it turned out to be an excellent one. This book grabbed my interest right away. The way this story was crafted, it was easy to imagine that a ring could wisk you off into the past. Once able to suspend belief, I was able to enjoy the very well created characters and well written story. You can picture the estate by the sea and our heroine falling in love.

Shaelyn has agreed to take part in a living history re-enactment on board a historic ship. She is to be the bride in the re-enactment to be married on board the ship deck. Meanwhile, back in time Alec is prepared to marry a woman who has traveled across a vast ocean to marry his younger brother in an arranged marriage. Alec wants to set his younger brother free to wed the woman he really loves by marrying the stranger. Fast forward back into the present - Shaelyn is a journalist, now dressed in a beautiful old-fashioned gown, drops her pad, pen, and tape recorder on the floor of the cabin and in searching for them, she finds a ring wedged into the floor boards. She resolves to slip it on so she will remember to return it to the ship captain. When she slips the ring onto her finger, the ship lurches about and all the lights go out. Unaware that she has been transported back in time, Shaelyn goes up on deck and Alec, believing she is his brother's betrothed, steps up onto the deck and marries her.

Thus begins a well created time travel romance. It's easy to suspend belief in this one. You grow to care about the characters. To say more would give too much away. It was a very enjoyable tale and earns 5 stars all the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars I could not put this one down!, March 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Distant Dreams (Time Passages) (Paperback)
After slipping an antique ring on her finger, Shaelyn Sumner is transported back in time just in time to marry poor Alec. Shaelyn & Alec find themselves married, quite by accident. She thought she was participating in a "living history" re-enactment & he thought he was saving his brother from a loveless arranged marriage. Alec thinks Shaelyn is crazy even if she is very desirable and truly doesn't know what to make of her. Shaelyn is a wonderful female character, she's smart, sassy & she's got brass. I really enjoyed the way she & Alec played off of each other. I also enjoyed the "Puffin" conversations between Alec & his friend Griffin. I laughed out loud at the "Pugilistic Puffin" (you'll have to read the book to understand!). I love humor in romance novels and this one doesn't disappoint. Jenny Lykins is one terrific author and this book is well worth your time.

I do not have any problem with the fact that our hero thinks our heroine is crazy and just can't believe she is from the future. To be honest, I think I would have a hard time believing anyone if they where to tell me that they were from the future. My biggest problem with the story is the ending...always the ending with Ms. Lykin's books. Is she trying to keep the story under a certain page number? Every story of her's that I read, the end is rushed. Where are we all going to in such a hurry that we have to cram 40-70 pages of story into 3??? One minute Alex doesn't belive her and the next he is devising a way for Shaelyn to return from the future. No revelation, just a scolding fron his sister (and not a very convincing one to me at that). What about Shaelyn's family? They don't think she's certifyable and accept that she gets swept back to the past? Can anyone be such a complete jerk as Alex's father and behave how he did? Please Ms. Lykins, I love your plot, ideas, and writing, but I wish you would take more time with your endings.

5.0 out of 5 stars I read them backwards, July 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Distant Dreams (Time Passages) (Paperback)
I loved this book, I however would have liked to have read it before I read River of Dreams also by Ms. Lykins. I loved the way she brought the characters of this book together, and if I had read them in order would have enjoyed it all the more, my advice to you is if you would like to know more about Shaelyn and Alec dont miss River of Dreams, and try and read them in order.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read, like all her books, March 30, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Distant Dreams (Time Passages) (Paperback)
Though I read River of Dreams first, which was a sequel to this book, I enjoyed both books immensely. This author has such a talent for evoking emotions, I feel as though I'm living the story.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stands Out, January 29, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Distant Dreams (Time Passages) (Paperback)
This book stands out among time-travel romances because it does a better job than many of keeping the reader guessing about how everything is going to be resolved. I recommend it to fans of romance and time-travel.

This book was well written. It is one of the best books that I have ever read. I have read many time travel romances....but this one takes the cake!! (in a manner of speaking). Shaelyn was a marvelous and vivacious character. Alec is probably the man that I am destined to marry. That is if I can take him away from Shae. If you enjoy this book, check out the sequel "River of Dreams". If this book wasn't rated on a 1 to 5 scale, I would have given it a 10+!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great!!!!, May 31, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Distant Dreams (Time Passages) (Paperback)
This book was VERY interesting. I was intrigued throughout the whole story. I loved the way Lykins kept me on my toes with action, all the while not boring me to death with too many descriptions of facial emotions like some writers do. I especially liked how she revealed little facts throughout the whole story and not all at the same time, tying it up in the end very smoothly. I don't know how many times I've read this book. It's great!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!, May 9, 2000
This review is from: Distant Dreams (Time Passages) (Paperback)
Enough people gave a rough story discrption, I just wanted to say I loved this book. I couldn't put it down (stayed up half the night reading!). I usually can figure out about half way through the book exactly how it is going to end, but this one kept me guessing until the last couple pages. It takes you through just about every emotion, but doesn't leave you with a cry your eyes out ending. I really felt for the characters, and I will definately buy the sequel! I have only read two other books by Jenny Lykins, and I think is her best yet, but will definately read more.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable time travel, June 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Distant Dreams (Time Passages) (Paperback)
This book is very easy to read, and one I totally enjoyed because of the feitsy yet intelligent heroine and a nice (if rather bland) hero.

I finished the book with no major complaints, only that the 'evil father' character is way over the top. Why can't the hero just move out of the house and live his own life? He is in his mid-30s after all. As it is, he seemed a little of a doormat.
