5.0 out of 5 stars User friendly, powerful, accurate planetarium. September 6, 2012

With constant rumors about Google dropping support for free Sky Map, I was looking for reliable replacement and found this app.
It does not default to 'point to the sky' mode with its jittery and inaccurate display (even with sensor calibration I could never get correct, steady display on 4 devices I have tried). It has wealth of features and good level of information (which is my problem with competing SkEye).
It does not bombard you with unwanted features or crash on you (like SkyOrb does). My favorite is the perfect implementation of pointer: you get cross-hair that floats slightly above the point where you touch the screen, so you can actually see what you are pointing at!
Have this app on all my phones and tablets and love it so far.
At the moment of writing this review, this app is available only on Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining & Educational! May 26, 2012

Super cool & fun! It must be difficult for a developer to create an app that is both entertaining and educational, but this app has it all! It is inspiring me to get outside and explore the night sky. Having it on the Kindle makes it easy to show the sky to others, too. I'm enjoying it immensely

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent version of Distant Suns June 10, 2012

This version is almost as good as the Ipad app, and much better than the IPod Touch app. It works really well on the Kindle Fire, and at the moment is better than Sky Chart and Open Star Map.
I recommend it without reservation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible October 11, 2012
This App is, quite simply, FANTASTIC!! It's interface makes it a joy to explore for the casual stargazer or for the more serious Astronomy-aholic. The touch zoom is great for those of us with vision impairment; and the night-black screen graphics make it a wonderful field guide (MUCH better than a printed star-chart and flashlight). Whether you gaze with the naked eye, binoculars, or telescope -- I'd recommend this App. A perfect information packed addition to your night sky exploration.

This version is a slightly stripped down version of DISTANT SUNS (MAX), the main difference being in (MAX): "You are no longer Earth-bound so you may fly out to the planets and watch them in their stately presence"

All the other main planetarium features are present.

Having seen a couple other astronomy apps now (Orrery and Stellarium Mobile Sky Map), I can say DISTANT SUNS certainly seems exhaustive in details. Interestingly enough, DISTANT SUNS has been around since the Commodore Amiga... I thought the name seemed very familiar. This goes a long way in explaining the polished presentation and technical information (ORRERY is very pretty, very glitzy, but basically a toy app).

Minimal permissions - in fact, if you have your LOCATION BASED SERVICES turned off (like I do) via your device settings, the GPS permission is moot. There isn't an in-app option to turn it on or off; it must be done via your own system option. Zero code concerns as well (no analytics at all!). Runs at 74mbs RAM and installed at 33mbs, but with no option to move it to my SD card. Back-key does exit cleanly for me.

DISTANT SUNS won't teach you how to be an astronomer, presupposing basic knowledge about the field, but it does a grand job of giving you the information you will want. Also, this one has a far better in-app explanation of what everything does than the other two. There is a [?] in the lower right that gives a pretty good break-down of the app's settings, layout, and default workings.

How does this stack up graphically to the other two I have played with?

5.0 out of 5 stars Stop searching July 25, 2012

This app has everything I wanted & more. Works great on my kindle because I'm smart enough to figure lat & long of my viewing area prior to arrival. Does not need wi fi connection to use!!! This is an app that I expect to use ever more. Copernicus would have given his telescope for this app!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Astronomy App! September 5, 2012
By Pat S.

I tried several astronomy apps for my Kindle Fire before trying this one. It beat the others hands down. More stars and non-stellar targets than others. The interface, although a little non-intuitive works great. Allows a graphic display of changing seasons easily with the ability to change days while retaining a time of day. Great teaching tool for new or younger aspiring astronomers. Two locations make it easy to retain a home location while planning for a trip to another place.

It includes both Messier and Caldwell objects with pictures and descriptions and shows them nicely on the screen.

One minor problem (reported to author) displays the wrong date when selecting a meteor shower, but this is a truly small problem in an otherwise robust and easy to use program. A second minor problem is no night vision (dim red display) available at this time.

Please note that since the Kindle Fire has no GPS, several features that work well with a phone are not available on the Kindle Fire.
