Book Description

G.I. Series February 11, 2002
The twentieth century was a time of near total transformation of artillery and the U.s. Army has been at the forefront of artillery use and development throughout that century. American troops fighting the Spanish in Cuba during the Spanish-American War were equipped with the 1885-model field gun; nearly, a century later American troops fielded an array of accurate, advanced and precise weapons systems during the Gulf War. This unique, pictorial history of American artillery and artillery units examines the weapons - from field guns to MLRS and TACMs - and the equipment utilized by American troops along with the uniforms and insignia of U.S. artillerymen. This invaluable study examines field artillery, coastal artillery, anti-aircraft and a diverse array of modern missile types and systems. Distant Thunder is a thorough guide to a crucial part of America's twentieth-century armed forces and an insight into the evolving world of modern artillery.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware...this book is not so good, January 15, 2005
This review is from: Distant Thunder (G.I. Series) (Paperback)
I love books on artillery. I fully expected to get a book that had a history of U.S. artillery from--as the title says--The Spanish/American War to Present. What I got was an awful book with lousy production values that centered on a hodgepodge of photos about U.S. artilleryman UNIFORMS. Brother. The first couple of pages are color, and then the book descends into a morass of black-and-white photos. Now I know that a lot of (pre-color film) photos were created in B&W, but some are conversions from color to B&W...and very, very poorly done, at that. They're muddy; haven't been corrected at all, and the screening they did in production is abysmal. A real disappointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well reccommended book on artillery uniforms, February 13, 2006
This review is from: Distant Thunder (G.I. Series) (Paperback)
As the title suggests the book deals with uniforms and equipment of the United States Artillery from the Spanish-American War. Good reference for those interested in the development of military uniforms of the 20th century.
