Book Description

January 25, 2006
This book is intended to describe with analytical rigor the concept of distributed networked operations, which is a refinement of what have popularly been called “network centric operations.” Distributed networked operations envision combat being conducted by large numbers of diverse and small units—rather than by small numbers of generally homogenous, large units. Examples of the latter are sea battles between blue water fleets and strategic bombing campaigns.

In theory and to a significant extent in practice in Afghanistan and Iraq, distributed networked operations involve a mixed bag of naval, ground and air units, none of which is individually as powerful as a fleet, air wing or armored division. Operations of this sort do have advantages that more traditional approaches lack. For example, properly executed distributed networked operations are less dependent on the survival of individual units and thus should be harder for an adversary to disrupt.

The key is how the activities of geographically dispersed and functionally diverse units are orchestrated, or controlled. This is obviously a complex matter that requires a thorough understanding of the concepts upon which distributed networked operations are based.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a start to the science missing from Net Centricity, March 12, 2006
By
This review is from: Distributed Networked Operations: The Foundations of Network Centric Warfare (Paperback)
Jeff Cares has finally opened the long-needed discussion on the science of Network Warfare and Net Centric Operations. In this easily accessible work, Jeff challenges the short-sighted notion that if we build the right network, everything will be better for the warfighter. The network is only the beginning and it's not just about wires and switches...networks are behind everything, as Jeff lucidly points out. Distributed Networked Operations is a meaningful blend of complex systems theory (and application), the science of networks and the art of warfighting. This is a must read for modern warriors and those that support them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Modeling a Network Centric Environment, April 16, 2006
This review is from: Distributed Networked Operations: The Foundations of Network Centric Warfare (Paperback)
Excellent book, it provides a clear understanding of a networked military scenario by using the main metrics of graph theory. Anyway it stills the question about how we should model the interactions and flows among the nodes in a network centric environment.

4.0 out of 5 stars Distributed Thinking, April 26, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Distributed Networked Operations: The Foundations of Network Centric Warfare (Paperback)
This is in many ways a perplexing book. Its author, Jeff Cares, clearly understands the technical requirements for what is called Network Centric Warfare and offers some excellent insights on its relationship to distributed networked operations. Yet in the end, at least to this reviewer, his book is very unsatisfactory. This is because of the author's style: he does not provide very smooth transitions from one topic to another nor does he really integrate the information he presents in a very effective manner. Also the scenarios and analogies he offers by way of illustration do not seem well chosen or presented. While this book contains a lot of really good information, the reader has to work to dig it out of not very well crafted or organized prose.
