Editorial Reviews

Vinyl LP pressing includes bonus CD edition. 2011 album from the Chicago-based experimental artist. For these songs, only the piano proved delicate and flexible enough to hold Azita as she sang of unsaid moments, testing the words she heard that no one else dared to say. Even with a minimal palette, these performances are a brooding, commanding lot. Disturbing the Air considers the darkness that comes over a relationship in imbalance; vacated by one party, leaving the other in a faded, ghostly state. For Azita, this is a state of non-being. It means matching oneself to the void, a terrifying encounter.

... and fullness of art.

A woman and her piano, and a dash of strings. This is what you will find on Azita Youssefi's new solo album, a work that aims very high in its sparseness. Nina Simone, Joni Mitchell high, actually.

And it gets there. The twelve tracks on "Disturbing" manage to create the same deep, lyrical atmosphere of records such as "...And Piano!" or "Blue", thus offering the listener a new songwriterly gem to treasure.

Azita's voice is a subtle, unpredictable instrument. She ably blends the two aforementioned songstresses, yet her sometimes atonal delivery also suggests Nico and, when she resorts to falsetto, a chilled version of Dusty Springfield.

She uses this voice to sing masterful, complex lyrics about lack of communication in love. The words are so notable that they are already impressive when you read them. When sung, their range of meaning is further enhanced by Azita's sinuous phrasing and by the music itself, that is often steeped in jazz and 60s-flavored melodies, while at times sounding more European than American.

That said, this is not an album that welcomes you with open arms. The combination of sparseness and lyrical complexity requires your full and constant attention, yet it is needless to say that you will be richly rewarded for the time devoted to this disc.

In a world that speeds by in twitters and flashes, Azita offers slowness and lucid calm. Even if its themes can be painful, "Disturbing" is never maudlin or utterly desperate; it even ends on a (faint) ray pf hope in the jazzy echolalia of "Keep Hymn", one of its many key tracks.

Given the value of this work, it is therefore surprising that it is released in a very odd format.
