About the Author

America is listening to Cathi Brese Doebler! Quoted in USA Today, Woman's Day, FoxBusiness.com, CNBC, NASDAQ.com, MSN Money, ABC News and more, Cathi's much needed message is catching on fast, and with good reason! She's living the life many only dream of, and she offers help to those who want to take charge of their own life and their family.

In order to balance time with family more effectively, Cathi left her full-time job as a Manager of Performance Development and started her own consulting business. The main reason for this change was that Ms. Doebler wanted to be the main caretaker for her children. She was able to balance time with her children while running her own part-time consulting business.

Nine years after going to part-time hours, she has shared her insight into the struggle parents face when making a transition from being full-time employees to part-time employees or stay-at-home parents.

Ms. Doebler is a mother of two, and has experience in writing, recruiting, management coaching, and training. Ms. Doebler has a Master of Science in Corporate Communication and fifteen years of experience in the Human Resources field. This is her first book.

As I read this book, I thought often of the great moms I know (so many of them!) and all the ways they make life work while doing their best for their children and families. I am constantly in awe of moms and the lives they create for their families. Cathi Brese Doebler does a wonderful job of helping parents think through how they might thrive on less than one income, so that children have the benefit of more "face time" with their parents. Here's what I loved about the book:

-It addresses the fallacy of "having it all" in a way that is loving and gentle.
-It is drenched in Scripture. I always love that. Such a foundation for reflection and a motivation for change.
-It is so darn practical. Doebler is generous with tools and resources to help the reader really dig in and make a change.
-It is hopeful. I think most parents want to spend more time with their kids, but don't know exactly how they can make it happen. Doebler's practical helps are helpful and hopeful.
-It points out the messages we are all (not just kids) getting from our culture and encourages a thoughtful, prayerful reflection on what we're taking in.
-Each chapter has a prayer at the end of it. Again, so helpful to keep in perspective Who helps us change.

I highly recommend the book!

With today's economy, many of us are in the same boat. Either we have been let go from work, having trouble finding another job, or trying to decide whether it is more practical to stay at home and raise the children, or work and pay for daycare. If this sounds like you, I would highly suggest you pick up Cathi's book, Ditch the Joneses, Discover Your Family, today. Even if you don't think you have time to read a book, you will be surprised at how quickly you can finish the book.

I loved how Cathi shares with the reader, creative and practical ways to help save money. Through these tips, she teaches you how to simplify your life and learn to live on 1 or 1.5 incomes comfortable and without regret. Cathi brings us back to reality and reminds us that materialistic things are not important in life. It is our relationships with our family that count most. And, if you choose to stay home, Cathi offers advice on how to find ways to make money by working at home.

I, myself, began working from home after being laid off in 2007 from the healthcare field. I was a health educator, and with the implementation of electronic medical records, there was not a need for health educators at the organization I was working at. They thought it more cost effective to give patients handouts on their medical conditions and concerns, rather than offer a one-one approach with a skilled educator. So, I decided to try my luck at freelance work, and was surprised at how much money I could earn, and enjoy the work. Each day brought new projects and clients, and I was excited about work again. Then, the economy started to go down the drains and many others began looking into freelance work and accepting jobs that I was charging $10/hr., for only $3-$5.00/hr.

This is a great book for its target audience: Those who want to find a way to stay home with kids in the future.

Early on, my husband and I knew that once we had children, we wanted me to be able to stay home. For this reason, we were very thankful that we didn't have children immediately since his income (though same job) has increased since he began his job. However, from the beginning we tried to live on one income. Much of my income, while I still worked, went to paying extra on the mortgage's principal when we bought our starter home.

We've always spent money carefully. That is one of the reasons why I was so interested in reading the book Ditch the Joneses: Discover Your Family (How to Thrive on Less Than Two Incomes). Written by Cathi Brese Doebler, it is a very easy to read book, while being informative.

I would suggest that Ditch the Joneses is a book for those who are in a two-income marriage and hope to one day have one spouse stay home OR for those who know they don't live as frugally as they would like even though they already stay home. Cathi offers MANY suggestions for spending less money (most which I already did), and she does it from the Christian perspective, which I appreciate, though anyone could enjoy and benefit from this book.

Cathi has great suggestions. Personally, we implement most of them already, or have considered the option. For example, a few years ago we chose to not have cable, but now we do. It was a HUGE savings. We rarely need an item dry cleaned, but when we do, we dry clean at home. I love that she suggests getting AND using a library card. I can support my local library (and actually use an out of state library, too) for the price of a couple of paperback books each year.

One of the reasons my husband and I are waiting to have children is because we both agree that having one of us stay home with our children is very important however that requires living on one income. As we are all aware, in this day and age, that is becoming increasingly difficult to do. There are so many books and websites out there that discuss how you can live on less which are wonderful resources with great ideas and suggestions on how to create and stick to a budget. Cathi Brese Doebler has written a book titled "Ditch the Joneses, Discover Your Family; How to Thrive on Less Than Two Incomes!". This book is all about how you can spend more time with family and even quit your job to be a stay-at-home parent without robbing yourself of the most essential things in life. This book was written for people like me because I am very passionate about not working outside the home while my children are young.

First of all, the title is awesome! I love that Cathi uses the word "thrive" and not "survive". Thrive is such a positive word and implies that you can succeed and enjoy living on less than two incomes rather than just get by while depriving yourself. This whole book is extremely positive in nature and Cathi really pushes her readers to look within and find strength to make some tough decisions in order to reap some incredible rewards. While I am not the most religious person out there, the prayers at the end of every chapter in the book were a nice touch, I thought. Sometimes I need to put my fears and worries out there and ask for help from a higher power so the prayers gave me a good starting point. Cathi does a really nice job of including those prayers but not shoving them in your face. They are there if you want to use them.
