Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Carol Barnier was born in Germany into an American military family. While she lived all over the place (from Alabama to Alaska),her family nonetheless regularly reconnected with Ohio (Go Killbuck!) and it is clearly the place of her roots. She currently lives in Connecticut with her husband and 3 kids.
What's her writing like?
She consistenly attempts to have a brave mix of Erma Bombeck crossed with a bit of C.S. Lewis, but readily admits to typically only achieving a solid Lucy Ricardo with a bit of Bob the Tomato. Because of this, you'll see her writing about topics that are sometimes quite serious (life as an atheist coming to faith), other times more utilitarian (teaching the ADHD child without ever using duct tape), and occasionally humorous (Fashion Advice for the Short & Stumpy) but always with an easy accessibility and warmth.

I do like this CD. Some of the ditties seem a bit long for the information you are getting. Also, most are just set to rhythm. Not to tune as I had thought it would be. It wasn't exactly what I hoped it would be, but I am sure my children will learn from it.

As a homeschooling parent of a child with ADHD, I've long been a fan of Carol Barnier's talks and books. I was excited to finally get a copy of Ditty Bugs. Although she cautions against listening to the entire thing at once, my kids beg for it! They each have some favorite ditties. Because mine are in elementary, some of the ditties are over their heads, but they enjoy them regardless and they're picking up knowledge effortlessly. I overhear them chanting the ditties to themselves sometimes around the house. They've challenged themselves to learn the Presidents ditty, and we're working on it a little more each time.

If you love ditties and agree with Carol that Ditties are one of the most effective ways to learn, you should look into Classical Conversations--a homeschooling program that is comprised of LOTS and LOTS of memory work set to engaging songs and tunes. My highly-distractable kids, as well as my other kids LOVE CC!
