Astrud never sounded better--BRAVO, ASTRUD GILBERTO !!!,
By Matthew G. Sherwin (last seen screaming at Amazon customer service) - See all my reviews (TOP 100 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: The Diva Series: Astruo Gilberto (Audio CD)
The Diva CD Series gives us a great album of songs performed by Astrud Gilberto. Astrud's voice was singularly beautiful; although at first blush she merely sang flat and didn't have a wide vocal range, in actuality Astrud could deliver a song right alongside the best of them! Astrud sang with all her heart and soul and this CD proves it."Agua De Beber" starts the CD with Astrud Gilberto performing a marvelous bossa nova number; and the male backup vocals enhance the beauty of this number. Astrud's voice is as clear as a bell and she aces this easily. "Agua De Beber" is a major highlight of this album. Great! Listen also for "Tu Mi Delirio;" this has an elegant arrangement for the piano and percussion; and when Astrud comes in this number truly takes flight! "Tu Mi Delirio" showcases Astrud's vocal talents nicely and she never misses a beat! "The Girl From Ipanema" is a classic Jobim song that Astrud and Carlos Antonio Jobim perform with panache; "The Girl From Ipanema" is a sublime number when these masters perform it flawlessly. "On My Mind" has s very sprightly arrangement with lots of positive energy and Astrud Gilberto delivers this like the pro she always was! Similarly, "Manha De Carnival" boasts a fine arrangement and Astrud sings this very passionately--I'm so impressed! "Manha De Carnival" has a very pretty melody. "I Haven't Got Anything Better To Do" has a wonderfully sensitive guitar and strings arrangement; and "Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars)" really shins brightly as Astrud sings this with heart and soul, Astrud's voice is perfect for this classic ballad; and "Corcovado (Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars)" is easily another major highlight of this album. "The Gentle Rain" is yet another fine number that Astrud aces without any noticeable effort; "The Gentle Rain" works well on many levels at once. "Once Upon A Summertime" features Astrud singing this moving ballad in English; she sings other ballads in English but "Once Upon A Summertime" is truly one of the better ones. "All That's Left Is To Say Goodbye" reverts back to an energetic, positive style and Astrud sings this sad song that has a positive melody even though it belies the seriousness of the lyrics. "Canoeiro" has an excellent arrangement as well; and "Canto De Ossanha (Let Go)" ends the CD on a strong note (no pun intended)! This awesome tune really makes a fantastic ending for this album. Astrud Gilberto should never be forgotten; her vocal talents are much richer than she usually gets credit for. This CD proves just how talented she really was; and I highly recommend it especially for fans of Astrud and that bossa nova sound.

A Must,

If you like Astrud Gilberto, you owe it to yourself to get this CD. It has her big numbers with Getz: "Girl From Ipanema", "Quiet Nights", but above all it has some real gems that you don't often hear. Instead of covers of popular American tunes you get some great songs like "So Nice" "Dindi," "Non-Stop to Brazil" and "On My Mind." The English versions of the Brazilian songs are first-rate. There is a killer Spanish song "Tu Mi Deliro." Almost everything on the album seems tailored to her voice.

Breathtaking!,

This is the compilation that introduced me to Astrud's music about a year ago. Before that I only knew her for her "Corcovado" with Getz. After getting this collection, I pretty much bought everything by Astrud that has been released on a CD in USA. If you are tired of the screaming and attitude of today's "divas", go with the original DIVAS. Every single song in this CD is a little treasure. I can't believe VERVE wouldn't release her 1968 and 1969 albums on a CD. Are they crazy???
