5.0 out of 5 stars I love this album! Not your typical Brazilian compilation., May 16, 2005

A music lover (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Diva Brazil (Audio CD)
So many great singers, so many fabulous songs, so much fantastic music! And what variety. Who knew that modern Brazilian music could cover so many bases, from Samba and Bossa Nova to Jazz and electronica. From the opening track by Guida de Palma and Jazzinho (Constelaceo) to the incredible Ives Mendes (Natural High)to sultry Katia B (Segredo)this CD is full of surprises. Not your typical Brazilian compilation. I can't wait for volume two.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid Compilation of Tunes, July 26, 2005
This review is from: Diva Brazil (Audio CD)
This is a compilation of some tunes inspired by female vocals in Portuguese... and it is Brazilian inspired. I only want to make the distinction because not all of the female divas are from Brasil. It's got a pretty solid range of artists and honestly has some of the best of the nu-Brazil divas that have been putting out good albums in the last few years. **This is really a Four Star product IMO as I made an edit, thanks to information given by the label.

The CD starts out with the original take to Jazzinho's "Constelacao", which is very charming and very dreamy; Guida De Palma (she is actually Portuguese) did a fantastic job on this. It's followed up by the more melancholic "Paz" by Far Out's own Troubleman. This track has been wildly popular this year and last, featuring on several compilations. The vocalist is Nina Miranda of Smoke City fame and the song is really beautiful. A cut off of Rosalia De Souza's remix project is featured here - Fica Mal Com Deus, given a reprise by Truby Trio. Some of the other artists here that I enjoy are Mosquitos remember the Drugstore commercials/Malcolm in the Middle?), a rare remix of A Bossa Eletrica's "Veija O Sol", Katia B of Suba fame, Bebel Gilberto and Arsenal.

I recommend this to anyone that hasn't really collected the works of the artists featured. However for those that have the works of the artists, I have to say that I believe most of these artists have far better releases on their albums/elsewhere. For instance, I like Truby Trio but I didn't rate the remake to Rosalia De Souza's version of "Fica Mal Com Deus" nearly as high as some of the others on her album. I do enjoy Veijo O Sol, but there's some more killer cuts on A Bossa Eletrica's album. But that's not enough to warrant not checking this out. I'd recommend it and the albums of several of the artists.
