A Great Mystery,
This review is from: The Diva Takes the Cake (A Domestic Diva Mystery) (Mass Market Paperback)
Krista Davis's second book is as much fun as her first, the Diva Runs Out of Thyme. Maybe even more fun, since we know know some of the characters from the last book. The story is fast and funny. You feel like you're sitting in Sophie's warm kitchen when she's making some of those delicious snacks and meals for the people who keep dropping in and are always hungry. Every chapter ends with a zinger which makes you read the next one immediately. I read this book in one stretch because I couldn't put it down. I can't wait for the next Diva book!

The Diva Takes the Cake--and so does Krista Davis!,

If you enjoyed the first book in this delectable series, you'll love this one. Krista Davis is a master at creating memorable characters. They're nutty, they're sneaky, they're comical--and they're all just plain fun, even the furry ones! Sophie and Natasha's rivalry reaches new heights when they pull together to create an unforgettable wedding for Sophie's sister, Hannah. . .who, as luck would have it, might just be marrying a killer. Everything works out in the end, though, for a deliciously satisfying denouement. Don't miss it!

"The Diva Takes the Cake" is the second book in the Domestic Diva mysteries. The first book was better than I expected, & the second is no exception. The mystery centers on Sophie's sister Hannah & her soon to be husband, Craig, whose ex-wife is found murdered. Of course, Sophie begins her own investigation, & the mystery is fast paced & thoroughly kept my interest.
I love the cast of characters in these books, mostly Natasha. As horrible as she is, Natasha really gives these books some funny moments. I also love the addition of Mochie, the Ocicat, & Sophie's dog, Daisy. Of course, all of the food Sophie makes sounds wonderful, & there are recipes in the back of the book.

Cozy Mystery. (I think Virginia is the location.) Sophie is the main character. She and Natasha have syndicated advice columns, which I think are "domestic" advice columns, but in this book, they only share the "wedding" advice from their columns. (I like Sophie's advice better, though.) The location - the flowers, the history, the atmosphere - is all so vivid, I could almost "see" and "feel" the flowers, houses, etc. (and I've never been to Virginia, or that part of the country) - The author did great on the way she wrote it, so that the reader can "see" and "feel" the atmosphere! I really felt the houses and neighborhood was cozy and homey.
Once I got into this book, it was hard to put it down! I love Sophie. This book was centered around a wedding. Wedding details, party things, flowers, food, diamonds, wedding attire, etc. This book was fun and witty! Definitely not flat! It had a lot of depth (very little, if any, fluff). (Even though I do love fluff, I proudly admit.) The characters were colorful and well-developed. I love the style in which this book was written. The author has talent, and a way with witty words! The book was really fun, in addition to being good, well-writtin, high-quality. It just bubbled over! I have nothing but good things to say about this book! This is the second book of the series. I can't wait to get the first one! At the bookstore today, I looked at the first and the third books (only 3 in the series so far), and I am so excited about starting the first book! It looks like it might have a Thanksgiving theme, and it looks like a winner indeed! And don't let the possible "domestic" theme shy you away from this series, because judging by the one I just finished reading, these books are too bubbly and bouncy and beautiful to have a dull, flat domestic feel. I think I've found me a new favorite cozy mystery series!

Take a Second Helping of Krista Davis!,
This review is from: The Diva Takes the Cake (A Domestic Diva Mystery) (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved the second installment of the Diva Mysteries. There are a ton of cozy series out there, but these books stand out. Each family member is interesting in their own way. The family dynamic is unique with a very close (geographically and otherwise) ex-husband, match-making moms and crazy Natasha. Both books are filled with humor and surprises. I especially like the "Dear Sophie" and "Dear Natasha" inserts. They are HYSTERICAL. While both books are terrific individually, definitely read the first book prior to The Diva Takes the Cake. I can't wait for the next book!

This was a great second book to the series and I look forward to many, many more. It was nice to see the old characters and I really enjoy the excerpts from Sophie's and Natasha's columns at the beginning on the chapters. I still don't understand how Sophie effortlessly gets so much food on the table, but I envy her ability.
This particular book follows a wedding theme throughout, and while that isn't my normal cup of tea, the characters make it very enjoyable. I would recommend this book, but you really should read "The Diva Runs Out of Thyme" first.

I read the first in this series, and loved it, so went right on to #2. I wanted to keep these characters fresh in my mind. Let me tell you, they are real "Corkers"....Quirky,rude,suspicious,nerdy,....You name it! Natasha DOES take the cake though! {for a play on words} I would truly hate her if she wasn't so humorously obnoxious! What a bunch! Mix that with murder, and mayhem, stir, and you have one heck of a buffet right there, before your hungry-for-more eyes! I cannot wait until February, and #3 in this series. This author has a unique style, for sure. I mean has anyone out there read a murder mystery, and laughed out loud, over, and over? You will with this book....at least I know I sure did! Savor this tidbit!!!!!

I loved the first book, Diva Runs Out of Thyme. So I was excited to read this book, the next installment. Boy, was I disappointed. Hannah and Natasha's behavior went from annoying to downright rude, ignorant, and offensive - verging on criminal when it comes to Natasha. I didn't like that Wolf had such a small role, and Sophie's passive aggressive behavior just irritated me after a while. I'm still debating whether to try to read the next installment with hopes it gets better, but I doubt it.

This book, "The Diva Takes the Cake" is the second in the Diva series. I did not have near the problem with keeping up with the myriad characters in this second book as I did in the first one I read. Part of the problem is that I read them out of order to their publication. I would not recommend that as this author has a ton of wacky characters that become quite confusing if you are not introduced to them from the start. All-in-all, I love this series. The writing is funny, it flows well, I hardly ever figure out who did it (or at least there is a twist that I did not see coming). This one involves her sister and her up-coming wedding. It is a hoot and I enjoy the homemaking (in this case, wedding) tips.
This is one of the best series I have read in quite a while. |
