Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The conclusion to the Flappers series finds rich girl Gloria in prison, while her African American boyfriend is losing jobs playing piano because of the notoriety. Meanwhile, cousin Clara, a gossip reporter for the Manhattanite, is dealing with rejection from her boyfriend, who seems to have found another girl rather quickly (is she a gold digger?). As in the previous books, there’s lots of smoke, jazz, dancing, danger, and, of course, romance. This doesn’t stand alone, and one can’t look too closely at how Gloria gets out of jail, but those who’ve been following the flappers will likely be very happy with the ending. Grades 9-12. --Ilene Cooper --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Hello Guys and Dolls,
Thanks for tuning in for WTF's musing's on Diva, the final installment of Jillian Larkin's Flapper series.
If you have come to expect the glitz, glamor, dirt, danger, and secrets...secrets...secrets. You will not be disappointed.
Though only a few months have passed since the heart-stopping conclusion of the last tale and where we find the players in our little drama; so much has changed.

Gloria and Jerome...
As usual, life can never be simple for these two.
Yes...Gloria has been freed from jail after killing the man that tried to kill Jerome, but at what cost?
It seems that if our little jailbird wants to stay free she has to sing a sweet tune to the Feds about a certain producer who is living the high-life on money from "low places".
Jerome it seems can never catch a break. While he waits for news of his lady love; certain people are determined to make his life as hard as possible.

The QUESTION: Will these two ever be free to make beautiful music together, or are they doomed to sing solos of heartache and loss forever?
The ANSWER: Read the book.

Clara and Marcus....
While Clara is busy being the mouth of Manhattan as the star reporter for the Manhattanite, Marcus has been hitting the books over on the campus of Columbia University and...planning a wedding?
That's right folks.
It seems that Marcus wasted no time in finding another 'forever girl' when Clara chose working over wifing.

The QUESTIONS: Is Marcus' new love all that she seems, or does her bridal veil hide more than just her pretty pout?
Has Clara really thrown in the towel on her 'happy ending' with Marcus?
The ANSWER: Read the book.

Lorraine...

I was a huge fan of this series since I picked up Vixen. I loved the third person point of view and the amazing setting of the past. I felt like I could really connect with the characters throughout the series. However, the last book really bothered me. I usually can jump right in and go straight through the book, this wasn't the case with Diva. The plot was somewhat slow and it didn't keep my attention. Gloria's part was somewhat wishy-washy in my opinion. Lorraine was always whining. Clara just seemed all over the place. For those that do not want spoilers, the bottom line is this, the first to books were the best and, for the sake of your enjoyment, don't expect a lot from the last book.

SPOILER ALERT! THERE WILL BE DETAILS AFTER THIS POINT THAT ARE "VITAL" TO THE STORYLINE

I understand that the characters were put in harder situations during this book, Clara after her break up, Lorraine struggling to fit in and find friends, and then Gloria just released from jail. However, it felt as though all of them were having outer-body experiences. This approach may have worked for Clara, as it does for many girls after a break up, but there was no excuse for Gloria or Lorraine.

Gloria is trying to bust some "millionaire" who knows what she is up to... I mean HELLO! There is so much Larkin could have done with that route. Instead she simply makes him just as oblivious as Sebastian in the first book. Also there was no reason for Gloria to be so wishy-washy about trying to get the evidence she needed to free herself. In the first book she didn't hesitate in shooting a man, why would she hesitate to get evidence. I feel like she was also extremely unattached to her emotions.

There is one thing Jillian Larkin is remarkable at--leaving a great cliffhanger and wanted you to read more. Since the first book came out I've been lead through the streets of Chicago to various speak easies in downtown New York. Diva the finale of the trilogy keeps you on your toes. You never know where you'll end of up next. It was a delight to read! I laughed, cried, sat in my seat knowing it was late but had to turn the next page. LOL. The Flappers made me go in search for old movies. I couldn't leave the world Jillian created; at least not yet. If you loved the books as much as I have you'll the movie Roaring Twenties starring James Cagney.

The year: 1924

Gloria Carmody who once was one of Chicago's starlits left her family to follow love to her beloved Jerome. She has given up everything to be with him. And has done the impossible paying the price for it in jail. Now to get out she must prove her innocence. The man she has to investigate is a real looker. This boy seems to have everything--money, fame, and fortune. Is it me or is Gloria falling under his spell? Hmm....

Clara Knowles gives what every girl in New York is dreaming about... a night on the town. Going to speak easies, seeing fancy boys. How does she keep everything together? You can have one lifestyle without it crashing into the other. Boyfriend Marcus Eastman showed her the door after she didn't tell him the truth. All of a sudden Clara doesn't see him anymore. Where has he run himself off too? He's gotten engaged to a very beautiful girl. Clara can't pin point it. Something doesn't sit right. His engaged girl acts too true perfect. Did I mention she's from France?

Lorraine Dyer's trying to turn her life around. She's trying to learn from her mistakes; not let them happen again.
