Book Description

March 16, 2009
When twenty-one year old, witty and sophisticated Jaliyah Whitfield is hired as a cashier in the trendy and hip clothing store DIVAS, she immediately knows that she is in for one of the wildest times of her life!

Seeking a better paying job to keep up the payments on her brand-new car and the loads of debt that she has racked up on her credit cards, Jaliyah Whitfield quits her low-paying job at the nearby sneaker store and unknowingly applies for a position in rowdy, erratic and sometimes down-right scandalous women's clothing store DIVAS. Between dealing with the everyday shenanigans at the store, her meddlesome and boisterous yet loving family at home, and working to attain her Associates Degree in Communications, Jaliyah attempts to find a guy to call her own and learns memorable lessons along the way. With cross-dressing thieves, backstabbing coworkers and a psychotic manager who appears to be intimately involved with almost every single one of her subordinates, Divas of Dutchess never lacks shock-value and is sure to provide non-stop, gut-wrenching laughter from beginning to end.

Divas of Dutchess is a well-written, true to life story of a family-oriented, African-American young woman coming to terms with life and love and realizing that things and people aren't always what they seem to be. Set in the suburbs of Dutchess County, New York, the story is a quick but an exhilarating read. While drawing on the new genre of hip-hop fiction, Divas of Dutchess integrates pop-culture into the lives of the characters making this book extremely enjoyable for young adult as well as adult readers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Page Turner, March 31, 2009
This review is from: Divas of Dutchess: A Novel (Paperback)
This book offers something for all ages. The book is well written; it holds your interest from beginning to end. It depicts family, friendships, and love. It takes you through day in and day out drama filled with the ultimate unexpected. References on classic R&B music as well as hip-hop will spark a nostalgic bone in any generation. It will have you laughing out loud on your ride to and from work. I truly enjoyed this book. For a first time authoress, I think Erica-Faye Nicole Williams has it going on! Looking for great things in her future.

4.0 out of 5 stars Circus Fun, May 15, 2011
This review is from: Divas of Dutchess: A Novel (Paperback)
"Divas of Dutchess" is about a girl named Jaliyah and starts off telling about her family, how she grew up and how they came to live in upstate NY, Mount Vernon. Jaliyah is in need of some extra money, so she applies for a job at a clothing store, DIVAS, and gets the job. DIVAS has a reputation for being an easy spot to boost merchandise. Will DIVAS become a reputable store? What will become of Jaliyah?

Jaliyah's family is just as comical as the people she works with - Carmen, the manager; a cross dressing thief named Jameka; and let's not forget all the people she meets along the way.

Erica-Faye Nicole Williams' "Divas of Dutchess" is a fun filled book written for young adults and adults alike. It is very well written.
