Hurley is the father of both Bobby, an All-American basketball player at Duke--this season, a rookie guard with the Sacramento Kings of the NBA--and Danny, a star player at Seton Hall. Pops Hurley is also head basketball coach at St. Anthony's in Jersey City. Last season, he kept a diary of his very hectic basketball schedule, which included his own St. Anthony's practices and games as well as every Duke and Seton Hall game he could squeeze in. The Duke and Seton Hall aspects of Hurley's diary are fairly routine sagas of big-time college hoops, but the story of Hurley's players at St. Anthony's, an inner-city Catholic school, packs considerably more power. Many of the players are from poor, single-parent homes. The lure of the street is strong, but these kids want something more. Many work long hours at low-paying jobs to earn the school's tuition. What they get in return is the discipline and caring family atmosphere offered by the faculty and by Hurley, who has spent 22 years providing opportunities for people who might not otherwise have a chance.
