Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

First-time novelist Malone stirs up an ambitious brew of politics, romance, religion and betrayal in this evangelical Christian thriller set against the backdrop of Italy and the Middle East. The story gets off to a quick start when terrorists attempt to kidnap navy admiral Hardy's only child, the alluring teenage Giselle, and 1st Lt. Raz Chayil heroically comes to the rescue. We fast-forward eight years to find Raz and Giselle falling into love and matrimony. Raz has sold out to the opposition party long ago, however, and his marriage to Giselle is a political maneuver complicated by his love for her. When Giselle discovers her husband's duplicity, she flees straight into the arms of more intrigue and terrorism. One of the book's strengths is the web of mystery the author builds around his characters; it's also a weakness, as the sudden revelations can be confusing. To his credit, Malone works hard at balancing his critical observations about Islam, Judaism and Catholicism with positive characters from each faith. Evangelical readers will be satisfied when the Jewish Raz and the Catholic Giselle each find their religious traditions lacking and undergo conversions. An instructional tone about faith or culture occasionally brings the story to a stop, but Malone tosses in just enough surprises to encourage the reader to turn the next page. There's promise in this first effort, and readers who like a military edge to their evangelical thrillers should be intrigued.

Review

There's promise in this first effort, and readers who like a military edge to their evangelical thrillers should be intrigued. (Publishers Weekly 20040603)

Divided Loyalties is both chilling and mesmerizing as the reader is drawn into the convoluted twists and turns of espionage. (Christian Library Journal 20040603)

Christian readers will find the twists and turns of Divided Loyalties captivating and its heroine Giselle fascinating. This is a fast-moving and well-researched novel of suspense and romance. (Hank Searls Author of Overboard, Jaws2, screenwriter of The Fugitive and 20040603)

In her fascinating debut fiction, L.K. Malone has written a fast-paced, action-filled Christian spy novel that is also an inter-faith love story. She skillfully weaves together all the elements necessary to produce a page-turner that will keep the reader up late, breathing fast, in order to find out who done what. Don't make any guesses as to her convoluted plot, because you'll be wrong. Spies, counterspies, and counter-counterspies abound in Malone's welcome venture into Christian writing. Hers is a fresh voice in the field of Christian fiction, sure to be a best-seller and garnering her legions of fans. (Linda Hutton Editor of Hutton Book Review Services )

One of the most riveting novels I've read in a long time. (Dorinda Moerer N.W. Baptist Witness )

Readers should be prepared to set aside enough time to really dig in and enjoy this novel, as they may have a difficult time putting it down. (Messianic Times )

4.0 out of 5 stars You Won't Want to Put This Book Down!, August 2, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Divided Loyalties (Paperback)
A fast moving and stiring story that leaves the reader wanting more. . . Weaved throughout this modern day story of espionage, terrorism and betrayal set mostly in Italy and framed in a military context. is just the right mix of Christian evangelicalism. While being true to the storyline, L. K. Malone, skillfully makes a clear and accurate presentation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ without "bashing" the faiths, or lack thereof, of the other characters in her story. Obviously this is a labor of love and the result of extensive research. Although there's a surprise around just about every corner, or turn of the page, the story is easy enough to follow, although it gets a little confusing at the end (maybe by intent), which left me wondering, "who was that guy working for?" As a former Marine, I found the details mostly accurate although some minor errors were a little distracting (e.g., the term "soldier" typically refers to Army personnel, never a Marine or Sailor(Navy). Reminds me a lot of any of W.E.B. Griffin's series of military thrillers, only with a PG-13 (violence) rating. All in all it's a great read that I recommend to anyone, regardless of their faith. Would be a great tool for any evangelical Christian to use (recommend to an unsaved friend)in communicating the Gospel in an entertaining and non-threatening manner. Great job!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW, April 30, 2002
This review is from: Divided Loyalties (Paperback)
Giselle, the daughter of a high-ranking navy captain, has lived on secure military bases around the world, isolated and protected. Until Raz comes into her life, and touches her heart in a way no one else has. After Raz saves her life from terrorists, Giselle realizes she's fallen in love. Unfortunately, Raz has a dark secret that he can't share. When Giselle stumbles across it, she will do anything to escape, except she isn't quite sure who or what she's running from, as anyone and everyone seem to have a hidden agenda. Giselle travels around the world and back to Italy in his romantic supense novel. A GREAT read for male or female. Made me wish I could have a man like this!

This was a terrific book! If you like Dee Henderson's books, you'll love this first book by LK Malone. I finished it, and then read it again! (I've only done that about 2 times before!) This is one of those books that won't make it to ebay, it's staying in my library! Get your own copy, you won't regret it!
