Book Description

February 13, 2007
Divine is used to getting what she wants.... Thanks to her loving Aunt Phoebe and Uncle Reed, Divine Matthews-Hardison has a place to call home after the Hollywood life she was accustomed to fell apart at the seams. Getting away from the spotlight that nearly destroyed her own parents, Divine has changed for the better -- though there's still enough diva in Divine to keep life in Temple, Georgia, very lively, from mall shopping with her cousin Alyssa and her fashion-challenged aunt, to worshipping at her uncle's church, to dating. But what if it's too much too soon? Divine has boys on the brain and she's itching for a social life -- at least as much as is allowed under Uncle Reed's watchful eyes. She knows she's too young for the kind of secretive drama her cousin Chance is going through with his girlfriend, but still.... Turning to the internet, Divine gets a major crush on sixteen-year-old Sean, who sounds and looks like the perfect guy. But she is about to learn a difficult -- and potentially dangerous -- lesson: Things are not always what they appear to be....

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

In this follow-up to Simply Divine (2006), 15-year-old Divine, the daughter of celebrities, is living with her uncle, a pastor, and his family in Georgia, where her mother thinks she will have a more normal upbringing. In Simply Divine, the teen became a Christian and grew to like her new situation. Although she is happy in the small town, she still loves shopping and taking glamorous trips with her mother. Thomas throws in everything but the kitchen sink here (teenage pregnancy, a parent in prison, and a dangerous meeting with an Internet predator), and messages about keeping one's virginity are so repetitious and heavy-handed that some readers will giggle rather than take them to heart. Moreover, almost every male in the book is portrayed as a "dog," looking for sex. What works is the way Thomas weaves Divine's new Christian faith into the story and into the lives of her characters, and despite the fact that most of the characters are chick-lit stock, there's something compelling about Divine and her amusing take on life. More About the Author

Jacquelin Thomas is an award winning, best selling author with twenty-nine titles in print. Her books have garnered several awards, including two EMMA awards, the Romance In Color Reviewers Award, Readers Choice Award and the Atlanta Choice Award in the Religious & Spiritual category. Jacquelin was a 2005 honoree at the Houston Black Film Festival for the movie adaptation of her novel, Hidden Blessings. She was the first recipient to receive the Writers Achievement Award at the North Carolina Book Festival in Winston-Salem.

Although Jacquelin initially published in the romance genre, she decided to follow the call on her heart to write Christian fiction because she seeks to write books that will touch your heart and uplift your spirits with tales of characters who yearn to have an intimate relationship with God. Committed to writing books that glorify God and her growing teen audience, Jacquelin published the first of her Young Adult Inspirational Fiction series titled Simply Divine in October 2006. Her second book in the series, Divine Confidential was nominated for a 2008 NAACP Image Award. She has since gone on to publish two more books in the series.

When asked why she is so passionate about writing teen novels, Thomas shares that teens are confronted with so much--sex, drugs, violence and abuse, physically and mentally. They need to not only listen to what the world says about these things but also to what the Bible says.

Jacquelin is a member of the National Writers Union, Romance Writers of America and the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. She is happily married to her best friend and is the proud mother of three children. Jacquelin and her family live in North Carolina.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignorance Is Not Bliss, March 1, 2007
This review is from: Divine Confidential (The Divine Series #2) (Paperback)

Ignorance: 1) a lack of knowledge; 2) a willful lack of desire to improve the efficiency, merit, effectiveness or usefulness of one's actions; 3) the state of being ignorant/unaware

Bliss: A state of extreme happiness

For Divine Mathews-Hardison, the combined definitions above become a painful lesson learned.

In this sequel to Simply Divine, we find the self-proclaimed 15-year-old diva and new Christian, ready to resume her life in Temple, Georgia with her Aunt, Uncle and cousins.

As mature as she believes she is, Divine finds that her determination to be the object of worship by her 'boo' can have catastrophic consequences.

In spite of sound advice dispensed by family and friends, we see the head-strong protagonist forge ahead with her plans for bliss, believing she knows what is best for her life. She will soon find that her plans, although seemingly sound, have many flaws.

Although a story of fiction, through the family setting, Author Thomas does a great job of portraying the consequence of choice by teens overwhelmed with raging hormones, peer pressure and personal insecurities. Open dialogue between the characters is realistic and speaks to unasked questions of children in need of answers.

In a world where teen promiscuity and allowance of self-governing is viewed as acceptable, there will be many who will take exception to the content of this book. I find the message in Divine Confidential refreshing and believe it will be of value to many standing at the crossroad of indecision.

Kudos for a job well done.

The Ups and Downs of Being Round
Taste My Soul

Once again Jacquelin Thomas has brought a very serious issue that teens are facing to the light...online safety. The characters are real. The situations are real, and the book is entertaining from cover to cover.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Read for Young Adults, September 19, 2007
By
This review is from: Divine Confidential (The Divine Series #2) (Paperback)
I have given this book to one of the young people in our ministry. I plan to purchase a couple of additional copies to give to a couple of the other Young Women in our ministry. The book hit on a lot of subjects that pertain to teenagers in our churches today. The book was not a difficult read at all, but told the truth about life and the consequences to our decisions.
