5.0 out of 5 stars Great tool for comforting the hurting, September 17, 2004
This review is from: A Divine Cordial - Romans 8: 28 (Hardcover)
Thomas Watson is one of the great puritan writers and is one of the easiest for the modern church goer to read. This wonderful little book by Watson is a great source of comfort for the hurting Christians. Watson unpacks this great verse by Paul that offers hope in a fallen world. Our own sin and the sins of others against us often leave us dispairing and wondering where is the hope of the gospel. This work by Waston gives focuses us on the hope that will not fail. It is a great comfort in the midst of trials and testings. Even better, read it before the times of trial and testing - it will be a great source of strength and insight that will give you tools to walk by faith when time are difficult. This is a real gem of a book. Often overlooked, this book by Watson can be used in leading a Bible study, or discipleship group. I have even used it in counseling sessions. The spiritual value of this book far exceeds what you will pay for it. Also makes a great gift for your pastor or anyone who enjoys reading classic puritan theology. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars God's Power And Wisdom On Display, August 19, 2011
By
J. Adrian (Orange,New Jersey) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: A Divine Cordial - Romans 8: 28 (Hardcover)
It is sometimes difficult for believers, especially in the midst of a deep trial,to understand how this can be for their good.Mr.Watson observes that it should settle the heart if one realizes that in all the afflictions that come upon us,God has a special hand in them.
Pastor Watsons exposition of Romans 8:28 offers significant help and comfort to the afflicted Christian in helping them to understand how their Lord uses such trials.
It is very important to always keep in mind that it is God that has ordained this affliction. The author cites a comment from the early Church leader Augustine that when Job was afflicted,'He does not say,the Lord gave, and the devil took away but the Lord hath taken away.'
Some of the good work that trials accomplish in the hearts and lives of God's children are:1.They help to loosen their hearts from the world-thats one of the reasons why trials and afflictions are often necessary, because our affections go out to the world far more than they ought to.2.Believers are made more like Christ through suffering-When they walk the path that their saviour already has tread before them they become more conformed to His image. The more Christlike someone becomes it is likely they will experience a deeper level of rejection. If the world hated and crucified the Lord of glory, then the more one is remade in His image they will get a similar reception.4.Afflictions make us happy. They make us happy by drawing us nearer to God.Fanny Crosby's classic hymn 'Jesus Keep Me Near The Cross' captures this truth.Watson writes "the magnet of mercy does not draw us so near to God as the cords of affiction."
The reason the Lord can make all things work together for the good of His people is because His wisdom and power enable Him to accomplish whatever He desires.God's wisdom can bring the good that He desires out of that which is most evil. There are numerous examples of this in the Word of God.In the life of Joseph we have an example of this. The Lord used the wicked treatment of Joseph's brothers towards him to bring deliverance from the famine. The Romans 8:28 of the Old Testamnet makes this clear:Genesis 50:20 'But as for you,ye thought evil against me;but God meant it unto good,to bring to pass,as it is this day,to save much people alive.' The eminent Puritan author puts it this way "Sin in its own nature is damnable, but God in His infinite wisdom overrules it,and causes good to arise from that which seems most to oppose it."
The Puritans were no strangers to great trials,so they write not only from an indepth knowledge of the Scriptures but from an intimate knowledge of the God whose Word it is and whose work in their lives was so powerfully manifested.
