Editorial Reviews

Review

The Divine Feminine is an exploration of the way the Goddess archetype has been worshipped and celebrated around the world, stemming from antiquity and passing down into modern times. In this beautifully illustrated anthology, the reader is taken on a tour of spiritual traditions which include ancient Egypt, Sumeria, Greece , Judaism, Hinduism, Taoism, Sufism, Christianity, and Buddhism, as well as native religions. What is showcased in all of these diverse traditions is the celebrates of the goddess in her many permutations from Isis, Ishtar, and Gaia, to Kali, Kuan Yin, and the Virgin Mary. The wide ranges of sayings, hymns, prayers and poems in this unprecedented collection reveal the importance of renewing and integrating our relationship with The Divine Feminine and point the way to a new understanding of life, spirituality, and our relationship with this planet. The Divine Feminine is important reading for women's and comparative religion studies. -- Midwest Book Review

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally revealing the feminine face that has been hidden, August 23, 2007
This review is from: The Divine Feminine: Recovering the Feminine Face of God Around the World (Hardcover)
I am not a feminist or even a woman, but I have come to value the simple fact that making God only male gives high standards to male characture traits and those traits being carried forward as "divine", i.e. violence , war, domination of women and children. I do not say that violence and opression is a completely male arena, but I think we have a good sized near-monopoly on those vices. Thinking of God as a nurturing mother ,kind and caring to her children makes striving to be like God, a goal that would truly change the world into a better place.
A great historical study and a great break from the Boys club of the three mono-thesistic religions.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Holistic Tribute to the Divine Feminine, May 3, 2009
I find this book simple and profound, beautiful and informative. It is a book I will return to again and again for there are so many inroads to access the information, i.e. images, ritualistic hymns, poems and the beautiful artwork to be reflected on and contemplated. Harvey and Baring get right to the point of how the divine feminine is situated within each religious community. The text is well written and provides insight as to why there is so much anxiety about the body in contemporary culture.

For anyone interested in knowing more about the Goddess and her ancient origins this booke is entirely recommended reading. If you already know about the Goddess and are a devoted follower of Her, this booke should be added to whatever collection of bookes you already have. It is informative and respective of the Goddess in all Her aspects. The worship of the Goddess is now becoming more and more open and this is a goode time to be opening ourselves to discovering Her roots. I recommend this booke highly to anyone interested in learning more of the Goddess and Her ways.
