A map for understanding your journey, April 29, 2003
This review is from: Divine Guidance (Paperback)
I have felt pretty successful in my life. But like most humans on this planet I have had intervals of extreme struggle and grief, including the death of a parent, turbulent relationships, divorce, personal financial issues and everyday disappointments and loss. I have always believed that there were forces at play in my life that were both beyond my control and out of my reach of understanding. I believed that the experiences I've had and the lessons I've learned were purposeful--and the purpose was my growth, my personal work to accomplish in this lifetime.
I have also incorporated different elements into my spiritual practice such as mediations, readings and prayer, and I have believed that getting in touch with my "greater good" would enhance my peace of mind. But I could never quite put my finger on why I was facing over and over what seemed to be the same life lessons. Why was I having the same outcomes? It seemed as if in some way I was like a student who keeps retaking the test she flunked the first time. Can I never seem to get certain things right and move on to bigger and more fun challenges? I sought out ways to find my path, including therapy and self-help seminars, and yet some of the same messages and lessons just kept reappearing. And though those lessons often reappeared in different forms, the content always seemed to be the same.
Then I come across Dr. Overton's book. This is a man trained in a traditional theological seminary (Perkins School of Divinity at Southern Methodist University) but who has anything but a traditional Christian view of life. Here was finally a book that laid wide open the meanings of those nudges, inklings, and messages I'd been glimpsing for years in mediation and prayer--the ones that I often disregarded as my personal "paranoia" or my fears of failure. Overton gives context and meaning to why the lessons keep repeating. In fact, he provides very simple and easily implemented strategies for "getting the message" and moving on.
This is a small book with a BIG message. It provides a context for me as a human being to understand the greater forces at play in my life. It gives me a basis to understand the meaning of those seemingly "small voices" within that urge me to take certain actions, or not. Overton writes in a style that makes you feel you are sure he is sitting next to you on a park bench or talking to you over a cup of tea. The book is subtle, sweet, and has so much depth of content that it invites a revisit--to reacquaint yourself at every new life change with the insights that will inform your journey.
It is one of those books that I will give to both my sons; Overton's practices and principles are so important that I would want both my chidren to have this information in their "toolbox" of life. In these turbulent times this book is a major contribution to the expansion of my spiritual life. It has and will continue to be a significant contribution to my "work." I 'm likely to buy 10 copies of this book and give to all my friends. Formost, this book has been a gift to myself.

Profound Simplicity, December 14, 2004
This review is from: Divine Guidance (Paperback)
It's nice to realize that we have a ready aid to help us handle all the problems and obstacles we seem to have to deal with regularly. This simply written book is deceptively easy to read--- but I found myself re-reading passages over and over, and discovering deeper truths each time--- not more complicated, but richer and richer information. The idea of living life with the expectation and understanding that our creator is a part of us, and always at hand with a word to assist us in choosing, a nudge to take action, or a gentle restraint from action, was novel. And life-changing. Came along at just the right time for me, but imagine it comes along at every one's "right time!"

By A Customer
This review is from: Divine Guidance (Paperback)
I have always wondered why life seemed so difficult, with one lesson, one problem, one crises after another. And I wondered, too, and why good, fruitful decisions were so hard to make. Then I came across this book, and I realized what had been missing! I had been trying to do it all on my own, without ever once realizing or knowing that there was help available to me, in the form of God's Divine Guidance, that could help me make my important life decisions in such a way as to avoid most of life's difficulities. This book gave me not only the information I needed, but also the tools to make use of it. Now, thanks to Dr. Overton's wise words, my life is free, easy, and happy!!
