5.0 out of 5 stars Modern Practicality August 21, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
With so many books on the market addressing the practice of lectio divina, I randomly started with this one based on the description. I'm so glad I did. The author is a father of young children who has learned to encorporate this ancient practice into his busy, noisy life, and he is even a fellow Minnesotan! I've read a fair amount of monastic writings and always scratch my head as to how to apply the concepts to my very non-cloistered and unsimple life.

Tony cracks the code: rise early, create a space, gather your Bible (he prefers The Message), lectionary readings, and journal, and follow the four gently flowing steps of repeated reading, meditation, prayer, and contemplation. He presents the historical background and Latin vocabulary, but brings it to the 21st century, which makes this young, stay-at-home, homeschooling mom feel smarter and equipped for daily communion with God.

I have implemented this practice into my quiet time and am starting each day with a deep sense of peace, encouragement, and direction. While this is not an inductive form of Bible study, which has its own merit and separate application, this practice is meant to glean an emotional response and sweet communion with God. I highly recommend the book and the art of lectio divina.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best book I've read on Lectio Divina so far November 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Out of all the books I've read on Lectio Divina (not sure how many, but at least 2 or 3 others) this was probably the best one. It wasn't particularly long, but the style was especially helpful. Jones, was informative and also very honest with his experiences. I found the examples of how his thinking and prayers went during times of Lectio Divina especially helpful. I'd recommend this to anyone looking to learn more about this discipline or to learn new ways to read God's word.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Sacred Rhythms of Lectio Divina June 3, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
There are times when one craves solitude, to be alone with ones thoughts and dreams and plans, or to enjoy a quiet moment with a Holy God. 'Divine Intervention' reminds us of one such ancient means by which we may accomplish this, an approach known in Latin as Lectio Divina.

There a basically four points to Lectio Divina:
* Lectio: focusing on a selection or set of verses, usually from The Bible--to Read
* Meditatio: meditating on a particular word or few words within the passage--to Think
* Oratio: speaking to God about that particular point within the passage--to Pray
* Contemplatio: resting within the passage and becoming open to possibility--to Listen

Lectio Divina is as much a discipline as a method. Its rhythms are slow and deep and rich. Other such approaches include: Reading as per the Lectionary, saying the Rosary, or studying the weekly Parashat from the Torah (Old Testament). As with many such spiritual disciplines, this one can be a challenge of time and consistency--and especially the practice thereof.

'Divine Intervention' is a well-crafted introduction and I highly recommend it.

Four Stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cool! March 20, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Jones introduces of to Lectio Divina, the ancient spiritual practice of hearing God through scripture, meditation, contemplation, confession. He does a good job at laying out what the practice is, where it came from, how to do it, and through personal anecdotes, why it matters.

Great and inspiring read in a conversational style.
