5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Divine Music!, April 21, 2003
By
Clark S. Lindsey (Rockville, MD USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Divine Intervention (Audio CD)
I once heard Duke Ellington say something to the effect that he did not make jazz, he just made music. Similarly, Julia Ecklar is categorized as a "filker" but the world outside the sci-fi conventions should know that she simply makes wonderful music. With her magnificent and deeply expressive voice she brings alive the vivid imagery in her songs. This album showcases that voice and her song writing skills. Combined with talented producer Michael Moricz, who also contributed some beautiful instrumental works, and with some fine backup musicians, Julia Ecklar created not just a great filk album but an album of spectacular music. It's wonderful to find this album finally reissued as a CD and packaged with excellent artwork and a thick booklet containing extensive commentary and lyrics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ecklar Excels Again, August 23, 2003

Wonderful music, marvellous voice, splendid lyrics -- all in all, a terrific album, both a grand introduction for anyone not familiar with filk music and an equally grand listen for those acquainted with it. The instrumentation appeals to more mainstream listeners, but the quality here is anything but ordinary. If nothing else, certainly take a listen -- this is amazing stuff!

4.0 out of 5 stars Music to make your spirit soar!, May 8, 2003
This review is from: Divine Intervention (Audio CD)
I owned this when it first came out on cassette but (like all my cassettes) I seldom listen to it anymore. So I was really pleased to get a CD copy and pop it in the player. I remembered liking it but had forgotten just how MUCH I like it. The production by Michael Moricz is stunning, the opening chords of "Overture" draw you in immediately and take you flying on a journey through a wonderful world of passionate, well crafted songs, delivered skillfully by Ecklar's powerful and expressive voice.

There are really only 2 songs on this album that I tend to skip. However, songs like the evocative and beautiful "Crane Dance" or the rousing "Temper of Revenge" more than make up for any weaknesses in this otherwise wonderful album.

Highly recommended to any fans of SF and Fantasy literature (whether or not they already know of "filk")

Filk Music is a fiction reader's dream. Music based on books, popular culture and most of all science fiction and fantasy. Ecklar is the cream of the crop. Divine Invention has some great songs. Crane Dance, (based on Karate Kid), Crimson and Crystal and Terminus Est. These are great tunes guaranteed to inspire you and to thrill your imagination. I only hope she produces more CD's! And quickly. Oh, and Ecklar's voice is quite a joy to listen to! A MUST for science fiction fans!

If you've never heard Julia Ecklar's music, you are in for a treat! This album represents some of her best work to date. The music and lyrics generally take their inspiration from the world of science-fiction and fantasy.

This album will appeal to fans of that genre, those who appreciate folk and/or new age music, and anyone who simply likes to hear good songs performed well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Julia Ecklar is the PREMIERE DIVA of non-mainstream music!, April 17, 2003

AWESOME! FANTASTIC! OUTSTANDING! I can't give this CD enough stars! It is amazing and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Science Fiction, or anyone who just loves great music. I had bought this on tape several years ago and played it so much that it wore the tape out, so I was THRILLED when Prometheus Music decided to bring out the CD!

Divine Intervention blends Julia's rich voice with original lyrics and music flavored with themes that are nothing less than inspired. Take the chance to listen to the MP3 samplings (Terminus Est is my personal fave)

BUY this CD if you want a music experience that is "out of this world!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful, May 10, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Divine Intervention (Audio CD)
I love this album for Julia Ecklar's beautiful voice, her lyrical melodies, and her imaginative lyrics. Her songs have a depth and range of emotion that I rarely find elsewhere. Many of the songs are based on works of fiction, from "Cyrano de Bergerac" to "Star Trek".

5.0 out of 5 stars Divine Intervention as it should be., April 17, 2003

I recieved my copy of the cd and was once again blown away by the depth and feeling of her songs. I have a copy of the original cassette and the cd is definitly superior as to allowing the depth and power of Julie's voice to shine through. Some of my favorite cuts are Overture/Ladyhawke. A mouse's view of the Ladyhawke from the movie of that title. Fallen Angel. You can hear Captan Kirk's anguish at the need and the questioning of the need to sacrifice the Enterprise. The Hand of God. The chorus just adds to the effect of Julie's powerful voice. Lullaby For A Weary World. This one makes me weep. With all the bad things in the world this one says rest, renew and believe that there will be peace and understanding if not today then tomorrow or tomorrow. If you have never had a 'filk' album, this is a good place to start. She is one of the few artists that I will pick up without even knowing anything about the album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best filk music I have ever owned, April 17, 2003

I found this on tape many years ago at a gaming convention. At the time I was playing AD&D and the songs inspired many games and conversations. This tape was played many many times till it finally broke and I could not repair it (believe me, I tried). Much to my disappointment I could not locate another copy of the tape. :(

The music on this disk is clear and vibrant. The images the songs invokes are strong and powerful. If you understand what filk music is, this is one of the finest examples ever produced (if you don't, it is just plain good music that tells stories). Usually filk music is a lone singer with a guitar. This music, on the other hand, is fully orchestrated and very professionally produced.

The CD was a labor of love and determination and it shows. The liner notes tell quite a story. My gratitude goes out to all those that worked so hard at bringing this music back to life.

I strongly suggest that parties who have enjoyed this album keep in touch with Prometheus Music (get on their e-mail list) and follow up. They've been releasing sample MP3 files covering such things as Michael Moricz's instrumental backing for cuts on Julia Ecklar's next album, and I can predict that it will definitely be one you'll want to add to your collection.
